Asking for your opinion

I have always had long hair. I still remember in 1986 when my BFF was visiting. We were getting ready to go somewhere and I found my first grey hair. I let out this blood curtling scream and she came running thinking I had found another of the mammoth sized spiders that came up through the drain occasionally. My hair has thinned over the last few years. Used to be very thick and straight. Now, I don't take care of it like I used to. I am thinking of cutting. It is about 33 inches long right now. But, that is not the only thing... I have a streak on either side of the front of my hair of silver-white. The rest of my hair is dark brown with streaks of silver through it. It used to be reddish brown. What I am wondering is if I shouldn't just go ahead and dye all of my hair silver-grey. I have often wondered how old I would be when my hair goes completely grey or silver. My mom had salt and pepper colored hair until the day she passed. Or should I just hurry it along? What are your thoughts and opinions on this issue?

Have you thought of using natural product to wash your hair? Along that same line i might recommend using natural remedies to lighten the hair as well. Chemicals can do a real number on our hair and dying hair with chemical laden products can actually help thin it more. I know henna is an option but am not sure about that nor how long it would last. I was thinking more along the lines of using things like eggs, lemon... Even hydrogen peroxide (though it isn't natural and you want to be very lenient with this as it can damage your hair further). Things that would lighten the hair more naturally, though a little help from the sun wouldn't hurt either. This may help speed along the graying process if that is what you wish.

I have spent hours online looking at Henna products and still know what would be good. Expensive to have it professionally done. I don't care to hurry along the greying process. I used to lighten my hair around my face with hydrogen peroxide. Used to use vinegar as a rinse on my hair and was told then that lemon was good for lighter colored hair.

@celticeagle Rural areas tend to have little beauty parlors strewn about and might be a little cheaper. If you bring the henna they may even give you a discount.

My opinion is do what you feel comfortable with. If you feel better dyeing your hair do it. If you feel comfortable with the natural colour then leave it. Personally I started losing my hair at the front around 16 years of age. When I was 25 I started shaving it all off as that's what I felt comfortable doing. I didn't want a combover or a wig and longer hair just looked silly so I got rid of it The thing is with dye is that you can try it and if you don't like it you can grow it out over time. I don't know if semi permanent dyes are available where they only last a few washes but maybe you could look at that?

I had actually given serious thought to shaving all my hair off. I think I am leaning more toward cutting several inches off, using Henna , and see where that takes me.

@celticeagle if that's what you feel like doing then do it The good thing with hair is it grows back over time. Cutting a few inches off won't be a massive thing in my opinion...you may feel differently. Even radically changing colour can be redone if you don't like it. One thing I don't like is how many times my words were red lined for English spelling rather than AmericanI had to seriously spell check as I don't like misspelling things but also do like to spell according to my nationality

My hair is almost to my waist. I had 3 inches cut off to get rid of the dry ends. I also have a good friend called John Frieda that I use to keep my hair a nice shade of medium natural blonde. If your hair is thinning, you might try having your hair layered. It will give the illusion of thicker hair.

@celticeagle when I cut my hair 6 years ago, I cut off about 5 inches and had it layered. It really looked great. For the first time since I was a child my hair actually curled.

Yes, I was thinking of getting it cut in a shag. But, I don't really want to go that short yet. My hair is 33 inches long and is at about my rear.

@ElusiveButterfly ......I had my hair cut once real short when I was about twelve and there was one wave down the back. That is all that curled on my head. My mom and uncle's always was wavey.

If you are tired of caring for it friend, then cut it, but you know that is going to be a shock to you. I would do whatever is more convenient for you and makes YOU feel good about it.

Yeah, I don't think I'd like it cut too short. Maybe about six inches off of it and then color it.

@celticeagle Yeah..that sounds good to me Celtic..you could always cut more if you dont like it. Bit by bit I say..that way you wont regret it too much. Color is so lovely..any color that suits you is fine..if you do the gray hey thats fine too..can always color over it if you dont like it.

Yeah, I can't afford to really keep up on a dye job. My hair grows too fast. That's why I thought henna would be the way to go because it would look more natural growing out.

@Jessicalynnt .....Henna seems to blend more with your natural color so I am thinking that instead it being more striking of a grow out, it will be more natural. I am hoping so anyway.

All the people that I see that allow their hair to grow without coloring look pretty remarkable as is without doing anything special to change the colors or where they are. The only thing with coloring, you have to keep it up, or figure out what to do while growing the color back out. When I quit coloring mine, I was in my late forties. I was concerned that the grey would be patchy, but it blends in and I shouldn't have worried about it. Some of the women that finally let their hair grey naturally I think most of them even look years younger than they did when coloring it. My vote is leave it as is. Your hair is unique.

I am growing to feel better about the brown color of my hair. I think I will trim and check into some Henna. Thanks for your input.

I would just probably let nature take it's course like what I am doing now, I sort of dislike chemicals so I just massage my scalp with coconut oil from time to time before shampooing.

Yes, I have seen a commercial for a concoction that has four or five different oils in it. I may try that.

I say cut off maybe 4", make it look neat, and stick with your natural color. It sounds cool!

I think that is what I am going to do. I thought 4-6 inches and then dye a pretty reddish brown.

I quite like my sparkly strands of silver, but have to dye my hair {which is nearly down to my waist and is now the longest it's been since I was about twelve} because I need to forget that I'm getting old. :)

My hair has always been long. It grows fast. Has just thinned over the last couple years. Yes, let's forget we are getting old. I worked with a gal years ago that was probably in her twenties and she was dying her hair grey. I thought that was so weird.

I have never dyed my hair and I went grey very young. I think the streaks sound nice; so if it were me I would leave them.

Yeah, I really have no choice. It breaks through almost immediately when I dye anyway.

I have always loved silver grey hair for some reason. For me I'm beginning to get more of it especially in the front. I'll be happy if it goes salt and pepper all over or straight silver grey. As far as length, I like mine to my neck and not much further. I have very wavy, curly hair and if I let it grow out for a period of time I begin to look like Bozo the clown. So I go every six or so weeks to keep it under control. I hope you like what you decide to do with your hair. I'm sure it will look good whatever you decide. Have a blessed evening
