Eastercon Diary – Good Friday 25th March 2016 – Steampunk Meet-Up

Dawn Abigail & David Wake Steampunk readings
Preston, England
March 30, 2016 3:13am CST
Great convention friends David Wake and Dawn Abigail presented a short steampunk themed gathering to share parts in a short playlet David wrote. As characters were expected to talk in French I decided not to take a role and just watched the fun unfold. The cast did really well with no rehearsals. The players were Mike Cule and Daiseechain. David and Dawn were dressed in character, and this was the first chance to see David’s clever mobile podium and book box as he was selling copies of his books, two of which I bought over the weekend. After this I briefly left the con hotel to get a meal at a nearby kebab house, Patty’s which was very nice. I returned to the Beetham Hilton hotel right away afterwards. Arthur Chappell

Personally, I'm not that into the steampunk stuff, but I did read one that was kind of steampunk romance. However, I bought P.N. Elrod's steampunk novel for several reasons, not the least being that I like P.N. Elrod - yes, another writer I have met, and she's another Texan. Still, just because I'm not that into it, doesn't mean I hate it. I didn't much like the cyberpunk stuff, entirely too gritty, negative and dystonian in my, never to be humble, opinion.

@arthurchappell I'd love to meet Spider Robinson, I love his Callahan stories! I've read some of his others as well.

@ElicBxn I tend to get drawn to the gritty dystopian more than the positive work

@ElicBxn I never went on to the sequels to Neuromancer - I loved The Difference Engine though - I missed that Worldcon too though I was at the last UK one - the only other one I got to was Toronto 2003 - met Spider Robinson who is fantastic

I took Spanish in high school, so I wouldn't have understood a word.

Do you often have this kind of themed gatherings? They look like interesting events.

Steampunk sure has become quite popular the last few years. My ex-girlfriend organized a few get together's, but I had nothing to wear to them. Plus we'd broken up and I just really didn't want to be in the same room as her.
