What Kind of Oil Do You Use for Baking?

Recently my husband made a chocolate cake from a mix and then a few weeks later he made chocolate brownies also from a mix. Both the cake and brownie mixes were purchased in the last couple of months, yet they didn't taste all that great. While I'm not really addicted to chocolate candy bars like most people, I do enjoy chocolate cakes and brownies, but it was very easy for me to stay away from these once I tried them.
When I asked my husband why he thought they didn't turn out so well, he though maybe it was because he used canola oil. We usually use canola oil for most of our cooking as we don't notice much of a taste difference to vegetable oil, and it's supposed to be a bit better.
What type of oil do you use for your baking of sweet goods and why? Have you noticed a difference in taste if you use something other than vegetable oil?
Although my image is of canola spray, he used the proper portion of the actual oil, not the spray as shown here.

I use olive oil, sunflower, peanut or corn oil.
The canola plant is suspect. (It's not a plant at all)

Really? I never heard that before. Guess I'll have to do a bit of research to see.

@MarshaMusselman Yes the plants in the field are called canola. It is grown a lot around here. I used to farm; we grew a lot of canola.

I wonder then why they didn't taste all that great? Someone at work thought the mixes were older than they were, but they were bought fairly recently. Maybe he missed some of the other ingredients or something. We may never know.

@MarshaMusselman Maybe he forgot to put the vanilla in. That would make a huge difference.

@marlina I'll have to look and see if the mixes call for vanilla. I've not made them often, and don't remember. I've not always used vanilla, but it didn't give that type of taste. I'll have to check that out.

I use canola oil. That and olive oil are the only oils in my house. What was the brand of the mixes?

one of the brand names, I'm sure. But even our store brand is good usually, so that shouldn't be why. Marlina thinks maybe he forgot the vanilla. That may be the real reason.

Oh I don't know how to bake so I don't know what oil to use. But I heard canola oil is expensive. So if I bake, surely I won't use canola oil for I cannot afford it.

Canola is only a little bit more expensive than vegetable oils. Here it's not quite a dollar more, but I normally buy it only when it's on sale. It's supposed to be more heart friendly.

I use whatever oil I have on hand. You can skip the oil altogether and use applesauce instead.

I use olive oil for all my cooking and baking needs. I like it better.
