Motor-Bike Riding Oldies

@Asylum just commented on @TheHorse's post (http://www.mylot.com/post/2913080/i-was-too-quick-to-judge) that 70-year-old motorbike riding men would be somewhat rare in England. While we were in Albany, Western Australia, recently and visiting a war memorial, Vince took a photo of a group of motor-cycle riders. They didn't have a camera so Vince used his own and has now emailed the photo to one who will forward it to the others. Many of these men would have been pushing 70. They are all involved in the military in some way. Some are Vietnam vets which would make them in their late 60s at least. Others have served in other wars and/or in other capacities. It was nice to be able to record this ride for them as they were having a good time. They said they plan rides together from time to time. To be in this group the bike must have an engine at least 250cc or larger. Although the original photo was a bit dark and indistinct, Vince was able to photo-shop it and it is now much clearer.

We were pleased to be able to make a record of that part of their trip for them. It was hard to believe not one of them had a camera.

@JudyEv Photographs are probably difficult to take from a motorcycle at 60 mph.

@Asylum The pillion passenger could always take a photo. I saw a great T-shirt once on a biker. The back of it said 'If you can read this, the missus has fallen off'.

Every year in the near city of Lugano there is a Harley Davidson gathering and bikers from all over the Switzerland and Italy meet there for two days. I have seen many who surely are in their 70's.

@crazyhorseladycx It is a great shame as the damage is taking a bit longer to fix than first thought. And he has had an extra air-fare each way too.

Yes, the bikes can be very expensive. Our 73-year-old friend has just bought a second-hand bike and planned to ride it from Queensland to Western Australia. He only got a short distance and it broke down but it should be fixed soon and he'll have another try.

I wonder how rare they are over here? The way we live has changed and being older isn't seen as the great barrier it once was. I've of several cyclist in their 70s. It is not one of those thngs that get recorded, I guess

We have old cyclists over here too. I think it is just a matter of keeping on doing what you've been doing for years. Of course, sometimes health gets in the way - stiff knees, crook hips, etc.

They were pleased to get it. It was very dark in the original but Vince was able to lighten it up somehow so it turned out really nicely.

He offered to take a photo of them but not one had a camera! So one of them gave us an email address and Vince has now sent the photo. Haven't heard back yet but they might still be on the road. I feel sure they'll be pleased with it.

It looks good. Thank goodness for decent editing programs. Have you heard Richard Thompson's brilliant motorcycle song, 1952 Vincent Black Lightning? I just posted a link in a comment on my motorcycle crash post. At least I think that's where it is.

I've just listened to it then called up the lyrics just to check. Great song. My Dad had a Norton probably about 1934. I haven't heard of the Vincent but I know little about bikes.

Those men don't look like they're on their 70s... it's great that they are still able to enjoy and bravely ride a motorcycle despite their age. Riding a 250cc motorcycle is a thrilling experience.

Some of them would be very close to 70 if not there yet. Many of the Vietnam vets are turning 70 this year or next. At least that's the case in Australia.
