Knee Injury

On Monday, March 28th, I had to do a day of heavy lifting at work. Being careful not to lift improperly and injure my back, I was extremely zealous about making sure my helpers and I were lifting from the knees, and not the back. Well lo and behold, by avoiding one problem I ended up causing another problem, because as the week went on, I noticed a pain in my right knee getting worse and worse. I finally went to our Risk Management Department, explained the situation and how the knee injury happened, and they agreed it was a workers compensation injury. I spent a good portion of the day at the doctor getting x-rays and MRI's on my knee, as well as the doctor poking and prodding and bending my knee in ways that I though weren't humanly possible. All I can say is, that after that, if my knee wasn't seriously injured it is now! They gave me a local steroid shot in my knee, a general steroid shot in my butt, and a painkiller shot in my arm, then slapped a knee brace on me and told me to come back in a week once the swelling was down so they could make a final determination of whether or not I need surgery. They also gave me a week's worth of steroid patches to place on my knee under the brace, so that the steroid would soak into my skin and into the knee tissue. Being examined by a doctor for a good portion of my workday was not how I envisioned spending my day at work, but at least the injury has been documented, approved as workers comp, and treated. Thank goodness today was National Beer Day! After my fun day, a beer or 10 was exactly what I needed! Anyone else out there suffered from knee injuries before? What was the prognosis and what had to be done to help your knee heal?

This sounds quite a rigmarole. I've never hurt my knee - touch wood - although I skinned them many a time as a child.

I've always dealt with knee injuries, even going all the way back to high school. I played basketball on the school team, and so my knees were always getting banged up. Pretty sure I've worn knee braces more often than not over the years.

@JudyEv Yes, I have health insurance. Pretty good insurance, too! That's one of the advantages of working for the government! lol

@moffittjc Do you have health insurance? You might be in the market for knee replacements sometime in the future.

I injured my knee the last day of year 2015, going down the stairs in the dark I missed the last step and badly hit my right knee. The doctor said I had a tendonitis and he prescribed an ultrasound treatment. I felt better only after two weeks, but it took almost two months to get back to normal.

@moffittjc I am glad that your fall was not too serious, at least you can laugh at that episode.

When my daughter was about 6 months old, we were vacationing in a cabin in the mountains in North Carolina, and I was carrying her down a spiral staircase and I missed a step and tumbled down the stairs. Doing everything I could to protect my daughter from injury as I fell, I took the brunt of the fall. I ended up injuring my left knee pretty badly, as well as breaking my foot, toes, and several fingers. It was quite painful, but also quite hilarious. Thankfully, nobody captured my spectacular fall on video!

@LadyDuck It was serious at the time, but since I was so worried about my daughter getting injured in the fall that I didn't even pay attention to my own injuries. Plus, we were on vacation up in the mountains, and the nearest medical facility was many miles away, so it was a few days before I even sought treatment on my injuries!

I think the doctors are so terrified of malpractice lawsuit, that they are getting ridiculous. They could have taught you to do some stretching exercise, and give you some Glucosamine supplement, give you a week medical leave, and send you home. You will definitely feel much better after a week. All these x-ray and MRI will show nothing!

I never had a serious knee injury. But I have had banged my knee a few times pretty bad. I always heard that too about lifting from your knees. I never do that.

Banging your kneecaps has got to be one of the most painful things a person can do! It is the worst! That, and hitting your funny bone! Nothing funny about that at all!

@moffittjc So I'm finally coming back to catch up with your posts. And of course, the one I'm now up to is talking about an injury. I haven't really had an injury but for the past few years my right knee feels uncomfortable ( sometimes hurts ) going down stairs. As for you, seriously, you are a trooper for all the injuries you've been through.

Haha, other than a few minor things, I've been relatively injury-free for a long-time now! I hope the uncomfortable feeling you are experiencing in your knee doesn't end up manifesting itself into an injury later. You take good care of yourself!

@moffittjc YAY! Good news! And thank you. I am going to the doctors tomorrow but that is for something unrelated to my knee BUT I really do plan on going again for specifically my knee. I won't have time tomorrow since I have some other things to get help with.
