I sent a donation a while back to an organization and now I am being bombarded with organizations wanting me to donate through snail mail. I am taking whatever they are sending me which is mostly birthday cards and throwing away everything else. Since I did not ask for them they will receive nothing from me. Some of them have nickels in them and I am keeping the nickel and nothing else. Have you found when you send a donation thru the mail that you seem to then have everyone else wanting a donation from you also. I am not rich and even if I was I do not like them trying to take advantage of me.

I agreee - once you've given them something they won't leave you alone.

@jaboUK Well they have all lost a person who was willing to donate to them but no more.

The most likely reason for this is that when the donation arrived your name was added to a mailing list of donators which was since sold to other organisations.

@Marcyaz I find it quite offensive that they would abuse your generosity in that way.

@Asylum I feel the same way and that is why they will never receive anything from me again.

@Asylum Yes, that is probably what happened but they will be surprised no more donations from me.

That is a terrible thing for these places to do, but that is what they do. I get some in the mail also, and some I keep, things like religious cards. Now i have tons of those places contacting me by mail.

@TiarasOceanView Well you know if they send things to entice us to donate it makes me not want to donate all that more.

I know people who get this kind of mail. They tend to prey on the older who think they sent me a nickel I need to send them $100.

@ricki_911 I take the nickle and they receive nothing in return because I never asked for that.

A lot of charities are like this - the more you send, the more they seem to expect. I also get random calls from people claiming to be from charities looking for donations and even if t was a charity I supported, their ways of going about things makes me less inclined to want to donate.

@euphie I never give over the phone as you don't know whom you are speaking with. I am now not very happy with any of the charities.

I understand, because the same thing happens to me. Whatever unsolicited gift you receive, it is yours to keep. That's the law!

Thanks, I didn't know it was a law but I did know I was not going to waste my time sending them back when I didn't ask for them.

A few of my ladies were giving to dozens of places. Said they want to help out. I tell them than not much of the donation they get actually goes to the cause of what they are promoting. Most of it goes to administrative costs. Once you start sending money to even one, you'll get many more requesting money too. They sell their mailing lists as a way to generate more money for the organization.

@ElusiveButterfly I have heard about the administrative costs and that is even more reason not to give.

I don't really get anything through the mail but email yes. Quite a lot and those damn phone calls DAILY asking me to give to a charity or enter a raffle. I can't do it. Not because I don't care but because I have been screwed by an organisation before and I just don't have trust in people who do that.

@VivaLaDani13 Isn't it awful how they will take advantage of us if we let them. No more, I now refuse to give to a charity as it seems you give to one and your name goes on some kind of list to a number of different charaties.

It's because mailing lists are sold.

@Mike197602 You would think when a person makes a donation they would no sell your name on a mailing list. That to me is very dishonest.
