I was excited to finally figure out by sheer trial and error how to create alphabetical lists on Microsoft Excel, which is greatly speeding up my cataloguing of my pub signs and pub photos collections.
The list gives me at a glance, pub name, town, county, if there is a sign or not as some pubs have none, if I have been in the pub, if it serves real ales or not, if I have used the images on Facebook, Twitter, Mylot, Pinterest, Google pics, my own CD-Rom storage, if I have plans to use it in talks, features, etc. and a points rating for sign quality and when I have been in, pub quality too, and general notes too.
The weather brightened up as I headed to the local shop ATM in despair at how much my money has dwindled at present. I will have to be very restricted in what I spend now until the end of the month.
The sign I am using to illustrate this feature is of The Thomas Burke pub in Leigh, Lancashire. He was a very popular operatic tenor singer regarded by many as comparable to the Great Caruso. Local campaigners called on the pub owners, Wetherspoons to name the bar after him, and happily, they obliged.
My Mum started on me with one of her random periodic you need to get a job now’ rants, pretty well telling me that the only reason I don’t have work is because I’m not even trying to look for one’, and making out I haven’t worked in thirty years though I have had several jobs in that time. It was impossible to even reason with her and given her heart condition, a heated angry reply from me would be dangerous to her as she knows full well – she is actually playing on that, so I walked out completely. She seems to think if she makes me uneasy and uncomfortable it will give me an incentive to get a job, which is out of touch with the reality of my job situation. I purposely don’t tell her who I apply for work to as it would just give her more to throw back in my face. I actually sent off for a dozen jobs online today – yes, Sunday, but she thinks I’m not even trying. It makes home life extremely unpleasant right now.

I love your pup info and photos. Good that you've figured out what to do about keeping the list in order. Mothers never stop worrying about their kids. No matter how old you are. I have to ignore mine when it comes to money, my youngest still asks for help once in a while and we do help him, but just recently he has taken our financial advice and is working on his debt, with a company that has set up a program for him. He has a good job so it will work for him...

@josie_ I have told her many times but she just keeps going back to the same claims - someone else she knows got a job so it must be easy to do

she never listens sadly - she just shouts me down and carries on - she doesn't talk to me - she talks at me and she's impossible to communicate with

@LadyDuck I find it saddens me - I see so many people able to bond with their mothers in ways that are impossible with mine

@gudheart my mum has all sorts of assumptions based on nothing about how easy she thinks it is to get work

@gudheart they think it is still like the 1970's when my dad quit one job and got another one later the same day - not an option nowadays

@arthurchappell I know the same with my father and family. They don't realise it is a lot more competitive nowadays

I would say having a running total of how many jobs you have applied for might help, but honestly I dont think anything will, and refusing to engage any such conversations is prob the best way to handle it.

@Jessicalynnt I have tried telling her my job search activities before - she won't pay attention long enough to hear me out. I have set targets for applications per week set by my welfare advisors - I actually exceed their quotas - If I was under target for any reason they would stop my benefits - they are happy with what I do, but my mum is never happy.

@Jessicalynnt she doesn't think in such a way - she knows I am bright so she thinks i should easily talk my way into any job I want - being bright actually hinders me as no one likes a smart-alec and I do struggle with authority, plus my age, having a very fragmented resume from lots of temping jobs, and being fired from one, plus my debts - it's a perfect storm disaster scenario

@arthurchappell I rather figured that. I wonder how many she thinks you need to do a week.
