Aldi Stores to come to Perth, Western Australia

Today's news in Western Australia includes notice that Aldi is to build four stores in our capital, Perth. Although I've been into these stores in other countries this will be a new thing for our state. It is expected that shoppers will be able to save something like $780 annually by doing their shopping at Aldi. Although I'll rarely get to the city to shop for groceries, I'm pleased there will be some serious competition for the larger chains. I refuse to shop in these because they are intent on squeezing out smaller shops. They also squeeze their suppliers. We have friends who are ripping out their grape vines. The price they get for their table grapes is not sustainable. They have 18 acres of vines all under netting (to stop damage by birds) but they can't make a living on the prices they're offered. Do you an Aldi store near you? And if so, what do you think of it?

I have never heard of Aldi stores. I don't think they are in America.

We do have Aldi's here. Some of their stuff I don't care for. But their milk, some of their meats and snack items are really good. I also really like their bread. Another thing I like about Aldi is that you never know what they are going to have in the store in any given week. They have some of their products all the time but there is always something you have never seen before

I would hate not being able to get what I like to buy. That is my pet peeve about stores.

I think they will be very popular in Perth. Plenty of shoppers will drive a few miles - or more - for bargains.

They have the basics, and that's great for people who struggle. Which is probably most of us. Just remember to bring your own bags, and a quarter. Although maybe you don't need the quarter in other countries? I thought the quarter/cart thing was funny, but also clever.

@JudyEv I can't believe I was so presumptuous to assume you knew how much a quarter was! Yes, you're right, a quarter is 25 cents. Aldi's is the only place I've been to that does that.

We don't have quarters. Is this a deposit for a shopping cart/trolley?

@AmbiePam Sorry, I did know a quarter was a coin although I don't know its value. We have 5 cent, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 and $2 coins. Is a quarter perhaps 25c in your money? Most of our supermarket carts don't need a coin. Luggage carts at airports do and I think it is $1 which you get back once you return it.

We have several big chain stores that offer low prices but they are doing what you said Aldi is and shutting down the small businesses around them so i don't like them that much.

We have a big IGA in our small town. It is independently owned and is a great store. I refuse to go to the other big stores although they are a bit cheaper.

@JudyEv That's great- we had IGA more here years ago although there are still some left but now many are replaced by Foodlind which is still a smallish sized grocery store.

Aldi must be the largest supermarket chain in the world, not bad for a little German outfit. Aldi exists everywhere, Europe, USA, Canada, Africa, and Australia.

Yes, we have an Aldi store 5 minutes drive from home, it opened 10 years ago and it brought a serious competition. Aldi has many very good and inexpensive products. I also buy bread freshly made at the store every two hours.

@JudyEv So true, they also bake Danish pastries and croissants, the quality is good and so much less expensive than the Bakery store.

It's very sad and that is only one example. My niece used to raise pigs for a supermarket chain but in the end they were making very little from a lot of hard work and they gave it away.

@JudyEv I really don't like them because the small stores die wherever they are built. Also, the stores seem dirty to me, although that may just be my perception. The one I saw in Ko Olina, Hawaii was very clean, such a surprise to me.

@ElizabethWallace I know it's another big business but it will be competition for our Coles which seems hell-bent on eliminating any and all opposition and which local suppliers an absolute pittance for quality produce.

That's fair enough. Our IGA is one of a big group of independent stores so is quite competitive. But most of the little corner stores have gone.

Yes, there's an Aldi store in our suburb and I do shop there. Most basic stuff are cheaper than other stores. I don't stick to Aldi though as I like some generic brands from Coles and Woolies.

Love Aldi's. Very good value and you save 20-50% each time you shop. That's great you are supporting the little man. We need small retailers with a good value.

I don't like the huge stores at all. They have no heart and are only interested in becoming monopolies.
