Nature post of the day 20-4-16 Buzzard

These nature posts are keeping me busy; I have plenty to write about but not enough time for everything so it’s a struggle to keep up! In fact I am behind already. It’s funny how different things are more noticeable on different days. After woodpeckers and wrens the last couple of days, today’s most significant bird activity came from buzzards. Walking in the same woodland I was suddenly surprised when an enormous bird took off from the lower branches of a tree quite close by and flew a little way through the woods before finding another perch. Later on I could hear them calling from above; they make a sort of ‘mew’ that you can often hear even when you can’t see them because they are flying so high above. When I emerged into open fields I could still hear the calls, and eventually I did manage to spot one bird way up high in the sky, which was shortly joined by another and the two of them circled around up there in the sunshine. I haven’t managed a picture, but again you can read about buzzards here: All rights reserved. © copyright Fleur 2016.

I once almost crashed my car as I was driving along the M62 between Manchester and Rochdale. On a fence post about five yards from the hard shoulder was perched an enormous hawk of some description. No idea what it was exactly but it had to be at least a couple of feet tall.

It could well have been a buzzard, I've often seen them on fence posts beside roads and they are apparently the most common bird of prey nowadays (and they eat carrion).

@WorDazza Apparently the body measures up to 24 inches in length (including the tail I guess) so it sounds about right. It's just that usually you only see them very far away : ) Or of course it could have been an eagle escaped from a display or something, you never know!

@Fleura I didn't realise buzzards were that big. I figured it was too big to be a buzzard but then again I'm no expert!!

Aren't they just! Especially because you often only notice them when they fly away!

We have several birds of prey in this area, many falcons and hawks. Most of the time they are so high in the sky that I can barely see them, but when they rush down to grab a prey they can be scary.

@Fleura I have seen falcons catching a dove, I was so sad, another day I was able to save a dove and I was almost attacked by the falcon.

I've never seen one actually catch anything. We get a lot of buzzards and kites soaring overhead but I've never seen one swoop down except to land on the ground.

I see so many buzzards in Florida when I'm there for the winter. Ours are all black, huge, and have reddish orange beaks.

I always think it is very hard to get good, clear photos of birds. They seem to be always on the move.

Yes it is, I've failed to get a good photograph of the bluetits right outside my window so far today!
