Nature post of the day: Badger sett

OK I will already have to give up trying to do this every day, there is far too much to write about and not enough time to do it! I’ll just write a nature post when I get the chance. Taking pup for walks has given me the incentive to get out and walk more, and has also given me the chance to meet more local people. One of these is an older lady with a fluffy pooch who absolutely loves to gambol around with Pup, so we have strolled around together quite a few times while the doggy friends play. One day she asked whether I knew there was a badger sett in the woods where we often walk. I thought I had explored the area pretty thoroughly by now but I hadn’t seen it, so she offered to show me one day when we had more time. This morning we met on the playing field and set out to look for it. As it turned out it wasn’t so easy to find, because of course things in the woods are growing and changing all the time! We were almost at the point of giving up, and the lady was very apologetic at taking me on a wild goose chase, when we decided to have one last look and finally spotted some freshly-dug earth among the trees. That had been dug out of one of what turned out to be several entrances over a largish area. Of course once we had spotted it we didn’t know how we could have missed it before, and it is actually visible from a path I often walk down, but I still hadn’t noticed. Now I know where it is I will try and visit one fine evening and see if I can spot the inhabitants! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2016.

Badgers dig big holes, there is a badger in this area, I have spotted him several times in the wood in front of our house.

They do, it's nice to know they are nearby but not so nice if they start expanding into your garden!

This has been one of the benefits of having a dog - I have discovered some lovely new places!

That would be magical if you could actually see some badgers.

It would be fun; I remember watching a family of badgers many years ago with some friends, they were very amusing!

I learned from this that what we would call a badger "den" is called a sett too. I'm sure you know that those feisty little animals could be very dangerous to dogs, especially if the badgers have little ones to protect. It would be great to see them though.

They can be quite fierce can't they? There are different names for all sorts of animals' homes, like a badger's sett, a fox's earth, an otter's holt, a rabbit's warren, a hare's form etc... do you use all those names too?

@Fleura The only one of those I have heard used here is "rabbit's warren." You could do a whole post about those.

I don't even know what a badger is! Is it the same as a woodchuck?

They are medium size European mammals, like this
Derbyshire Wildlife Trust will receive £98,600 from the Department of Environmental, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) under its Badger Edge Vaccination Scheme. Vaccination starts this month in an area focussing on 26km2 of farmland and National Trust land, i

That sounds as if it will be very interesting to do. I am needing to get our binoculars out so that we can watch across the road and see what we will see! Nature is so very good at camouflage.

I did spend one evening there but didn't see any badgers. Of course it's impossible to tell whether they had already gone out by the time I arrived, or if they had sensed my presence and stayed below ground. I must try again!

We were staying in a hotel in rural Scotland. One day we were sitting in the bar, near an exterior door (which had been sealed shut) and we heard some scratching at the door and when we looked out, there was a badger making herself at home.

@Fleura I think they know we are not about to harm them (well most people won't).

They can get quite used to human presence and just carry on regardless!

Maybe those are honey badgers. European badgers are quite charming.

I don't think I've ever seen a badger or a badger sett but will be looking for one in the future.

Do you mean at this site, or ever? I haven't seen badgers in these woods yet, I'm usually there in the mornings so not the best time. I have seen badgers a few times in the past.

It has been years since I've spotted a badger set. I am guessing there are some around here, but I've yet to find one
