An Unexpected Visitor

One of the first things we did after moving was to set up the birdfeeders. I love watching the birds. We usually see a good variety of birds, but I was surprised by a new visitor to the feeder, a Painted Bunting.
Painted Buntings are not endangered but they are on the watch list. There is a pair living in the Butterfly House at Cypress Gardens here in SC, but I’ve never seen one in the wild before. I took this picture at Cypress a couple of years ago. I would have loved to get a picture of our visitor but I didn’t dare move. I didn’t want to scare him away.
They are a truly beautiful bird. I hope he comes back to visit us again.
What is the most unusual bird you’ve ever seen in the wild?

how beautiful! i'm so pleased that'cha had one come fer a visit - perhaps a sign there's a pair'n they'll be nestin' 'n raisin' their young'uns 'round yer place :)
i dunno if'n 'twas unusual, but i've gotten up close'n personal with a bald eagle when livin' out'n alaska. it'd gotten one leg caught'n a trap :( it seemed he (she?) knew i was jest there to help i reckon coz 'fter 'bout 45 minutes it settled down 'n i was able to get it freed without too much damage to either'f us.

That is so awesome, @crazyhorslady You were both very lucky! The eagle as you were able to save him/her and you, that you were so honored to get to do so!

@crazyhorseladycx I bet that was a humbling experience! I know I would have loved to be able to rescue him. Poachers are horrible people who care nothing for other creatures but themselves. They will pay for that when their day comes!

I live in Illinois, and we have a lake in central Illinois that has a huge flock of pelicans. When I first saw them I was shocked. I didn't know Illinois had pelicans and always was under the impression they were an ocean bird. It was pretty exciting for me. You pic is beautiful. I wish we had those birds around here.

I haven't. I'd like to see a live hummingbird though.

I haven't seen any unusual birds but have the typical robins, etc which love to sit on my deck. That bird in your picture is beautiful with all the different colors

That is a tremendously colored bird. Unusual bird in the wild? An eagle if an eagle is considered unusual.

I love spotting the eagles. They're not a common sight. As far as the painted bunting goes, I think the color makes it an easy target for the birds of prey.

I hope so, but I'm not always lucky with the camera. He didn't stay long.

I have seen a beautiful yellow bird, but I don't know the name. It is of medium size, larger than a finch. I think it belongs to an endangered species. Am glad I had seen one because there are few trees here now due to houses being built.
