In Brazil, the special New Year’s Day celebrated with a bowl of lentil soup. For Brazilian, lentil symbolizes wealth, for the local people, lentil seeds look like coins when cooked. On the eve of their New Year, they go to the beach to jump over to seven waves and make their wishes. They believe that these wishes will be granted by the goddess of the sea. In addition, they also throw flowers into the water and wish for successful year ahead. Do you have also some traditional custom that still been practicing at present? Photo Credit:

Interesting as I didn't know that! In Canada we just celebrate and stay up until midnight to see the New Year come in.

We celebrate the same thing. But we also prepare some food on the table and eat together at new year's eve.

I didn't know all of that, but I knew that lentils eaten on New Year's Day is supposed to ensure a good year, financially speaking. In some cultures, it's beans or black eyed peas, and so on. We always ate pinto beans for New Year's Day!

@Shavkat Pinto beans are one of the easiest to grow beans here, so maybe that's why it became the symbol of a good New Year.

There are many people in my country that eat lentils on the stroke of midnight in New Year. I don´t have such a costum and I would not like it much as the lentils have to be cooked with no salt or additions.

We also don't have this kind of practice. For some native people in my country, they do cook lentils as ingredients with different kinds of menu.
