A Very Tenuous Connection!

A famous singer died this week and I have a tenuous connection to tell in relation to him. There was a man I first met when I was on a business trip in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He worked for the American division of the company I worked for, a few months later we were working together on a project in West London (UK). One Monday morning he was telling me about a concert he had seen in Camden Town that weekend and how all the musicians he knew, two of them had from time to time played in a band called "The Revolution" and he had known them since their school days and they had all gone to school with a certain Prince Rogers Nelson. Another person I met was the nephew of a Scottish Duke, who will one day inherit the family estate (as his uncle has no heirs of his own). We used to work together, not that he needed to being very rich indeed, but he preferred to because he enjoyed working. Everyone has these types of tenuous connections, what is yours?

I sat on the plane - my first plane trip ever - next to Phyllis Diller's doctor. He had a lot of stories to tell.

Ah! Stories that could have been worth anything? Perhaps if you were a gossip columnist!

@pgiblett What I remember from that trip 40+ years ago was that he had nothing but admiration for Phyllis Diller and her husband.

So what did he have to say about Phyllis' gall bladder, anyway?

My sister's partner played over 300 games for Newcastle United (relatively decent football team in the UK and my home town club) and 15 times for his native Republic of Ireland.

@WorDazza Maybe in the longer term, but this year's fate seems sealed. I have some less that tenuous connections to Southampton FC. I knew World Cup Player Terry Paine as a kid, met Laurie McMenemy, the manager, as a teenager.

I know who Newcastle United are, they are struggling a bit this year.though. That is a good connection. A real one not tenuous at all.

When my eldest daughter was in 8th or 9th grade she was a cheerleader, the teem that the girls cheerleaded for one of the boys on the football team, his guardian was Bobby Jackson, he played for the Sacramento Kings basketball team. He would be in the bleacher's cheering his nephew on. He had legal guardianship of his nephew at the time that him and my daughter went to school with each other. We would see him at the school from time to time, some families bothered him for autographs. I always told my children that he was there enjoying family time and they weren't to bother him for autographs. I did get to see Prince in concert many years ago, and he was awesome. The best concert I have ever seen, and I saw Garth Brooks, back in the early 90's and thought that was the best concert, but Prince hands down, an amazing artist.

@pgiblett, I never saw either one, but can imagine that either would be a great concert.

I like that connection and you are so right about Bobby Jackson taking 'home time'. Have to say my best concerts were Serious Moonlight tour by David Bowie and a Tina Turner concert in London.

None worth mention I think unless you consider my father's maternal cousin was once Ambassador to Scandinavian country and high commissioner in Tanzania.

@vandana7 I was not commenting on the quality of the person, merely the connection.

Okay, I have always thought of her as a peculiar individual, she seems nice enough on TV, but I suspect behind the facade there is a more sinister personality (but of course I may be wrong).

@pgiblett We have had Eric Bogle stay with us (twice) but few people know who he is although we regard his music very highly. That's about the most high profile person i guess.

@pgiblett He has lived in Australia for many years now. Probably his best known song was The Green Fields of France which was featured by a number of singers in the UK. He was surprised to find it had been doing so well when he eventually got to the UK.

Question: If only seeing the famous can be included? I mean what exactly is tenuous connection?

I don't think seeing them, or bumping into them counts. a tenuous connection is about theoretically having them in your network, it is about knowing someone who perhaps has an uncle who knows a particular person. I say theoretically because often these links are usually claims, not reality.

Mine are at least 2 in number. One is an AYRES who married into the Family Stewart. The other is a man whose father worked for the American Revolution, answering to the person of Benjamin Franklin. You can read of the latter here: I might add that this article also points to cannibalism! Intriguing, you say?
My distant relation, Captain James Montague Delare Ceronio, originally from Philadelphia, made sure some people were saved from cannibals!

Both interesting connections. Franklin is a fascinating character.
