Is eating Rohu fish beneficial for health?

April 28, 2016 2:14am CST
In India many people are staunch fish eaters. Specially they have river fish in their diet. India has many rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari. So there is no deficiency of supply of fish. Rohu fish is rich in mineral salts like iron, iodine and also vitamin C. It is also the best digestable protein. It is difficult to digest red meat and forms of non-vegetarian item. But rohu fish is easy to digest. In the summer months, rice with rohu fish curry or chapati with rohu fish curry can be provided in lunch and dinner. It is delicious and at the same time good for health. Those who have not tasted it, should try rohu fish. The eggs of rohu fish can also be fried and eaten with food. Bengalies also cook a chachary with the head of rohu fish and red or kolmi shakh.

I believe that Rohu fish is from the carp family. We do not have this kind of fish here, the rohu fish curry sounds delicious.

@sathviksouvik I see you added coriander to the finished dish, this is a herb that I like very much. It's not popular in our country, but I grow it in my garden.

@LadyDuck Thanks Anna for the comments. Yes coriander leaf in bengal is called dhane pata meaning dhania leaf. Either they are given in the curry itself or given in the raw form after being washed on top of the curry. But they add taste.

Dear Annaji, you are absolutely correct. Rohu fish belongs to the category of carps. Katla and Mrigel are the other 2 popular carp fish.

@sathviksouvik Yes, I am trying to connect it to the sweet water or river fish available here because even here river fish is preferred by many and they are far more expensive too..We have Kaane(lady fish), Payye and a few others. They tend to be smaller than the salt water fish.

Thanks Kiranji for the comments. Sear fish is also called Sear fish in Bengali. Basically pomfret fish, mackerel fish are also popular in Bengal. But river fishes like Rohu, Katla, Mrigel which belong to the carp family have more popularity.

It's such a common thing in our daily diet, that we haven't even cared to think about its nutritional value especially. We almost have it 5 days a week (which you probably understand how important fish is considered in our community) but I would not say that I am very fond of it. I do not hate it either, and especially enjoy it if it's deep fried.

Dear Dishariji, I understand it. In Kolkata, there is huge demand of small river fishes like Koi, Magur, Parse, Tangra, etc. These days people hardly do marketing of fishes, vegetables, and people cook much less. There is no time. So the food delicacy had reduced down. But eating fish is very good for even eyes.
