Do You See Many Squirrels Where You Live/

Squirrel Coming Down Tree

On the California Central Coast we have a lot of squirrels. We have ground squirrels that beg for handouts on our beaches and eat our gardens. We also have tree squirrels that play in the trees and sometimes raid bird feeders. Squirrels are cute little rodents. I met my first squirrels when I was six years old and my parents took me to the Capitol Park in Sacramento. The squirrels were so tame there they would eat out of my hand. I really enjoyed that experience. Do you remember when you saw your first squirrel? What did you think of it? Have you changed your opinion of squirrels since then? I stopped thinking ground squirrels were cute when they totally destroyed my garden.

Oh, I don't even want to think about squirrels! There are so many here that they're a real headache. They stripped the bark from my elm tree so I had to have it trimmed way back and I'm afraid they're going to kill it. I can't grow sunflowers or pumpkins because they eat them. They're just pests to me.

They are rodents -- rats with longer, fluffier tails. At least that's how I feel about them in my garden.

@bagarad Exactly. I wish I could find a way to get rid of them

@peavey Me, too. I have a lot of trouble with traps in the ground and they just ignore them.

Turkeys are becoming my nemesis now. They're mean, and bold enough to attack moving cars. I've been held hostage in my own driveway several times.

We don't have too many of those here, and they usually run or fly away when I encounter them.

@OldRoadsOnceTraveled Couldn't an angry car fight back? Or are they an endangered species? Peculiar, isn't it, that the laws for killing one of an endangered species are enforced more rigidly than those for killing humans?

@bagarad I wish these would run or fly away. They'll come and attack, and they have no fear of moving cars. They'll stop traffic in the middle of the road in a heartbeat.

I don't see a lot of squirrels in my backyard, but at the park or the beach - I will.

I guess they like to hang out where people have food they can beg.

I can imagine they lost favour with you once they started destroying your garden.

They took all the enjoyment and peace out of gardening. Every day I'd come to the garden and see another tomato plants mercilessly cut to the ground. I decided the stress of fighting them and losing wasn't worth it. What made me mad was that they didn't even eat the crops. They just chopped them off at the ground. The raccoons would at least take a bite and throw the rest away, but they left the plant so we could have some, too.

I think I saw my first squirrel camping. I don't have squirrels where I live here, but my mother has a couple that play in her tree and run along the telephone wire. They're cute to look at. I don't think she's had any problems with them yet. :)

My problems in the garden were with ground squirrels -- no the kind that would be on your wires. Hope they don't try to chew on them or there will be fried squirrel and an electrical or phone outage.

@bagarad They haven't yet. They just seem to run along them to get from one house to another. It's probably safer than them running on the street. :)

@pinkCardigangirl I've never seen them do that here, but we have so many trees they don't need to.

I didn't know there are ground squirrels and tree squirrels, and I don't know the differences of them. I don't remember seeing any squirrels when I was young, perhaps I seldom went to the park or get near to the nature. I am not sure if the first time I saw a squirrel was a few years ago, when I brought my children to the park nearby my house, and we saw a few squirrels climbing up the tree. They look really cute, but I have not feed them before. Since I stay near the park now, and always bring my children to the park, so I always get to see one or two squirrels in the park, though not many.

It's really not a good idea to feed them. They can carry diseases. Just enjoy watching them from a distance.

We have squirrels here, unfortunately, they are cute but quite destructive. And small, in fact they aren't much bigger than a chipmunk.

We do not have squirrels coming in our garden, there are squirrels in the woods. I think to remember that I saw my first squirrel when I was a kid, while we were vacationing in Italy, a grey squirrel.

The woods are just the right place for squirrels to hang out.

I grew up in upstate NY and now in Canada. There have always been squirrels where I live. Here we have the brown, the gray and the black. They are everywhere. They don't bother our gardens but they try and sometimes succeed to get into the attic in the winter...This past winter was the first for the squirrels in the attic. I hope its the last.

I have been reading about your struggle with those pesky invaders. Squirrels weren't meant to be inside.
