Photo taken by me – The Boer War Memorial, Salford
Preston, England
April 30, 2016 5:25am CST
I remain a prisoner of the elements as it is snowing again four days after I got my camcorder, ruining all my plans for its use. I booked my place at the 2017 Eastercon science fiction convention, taking place in Birmingham next April. I registered and paid online – the price goes up after tomorrow so early booking is always advisable. My welfare income came through today so that allowed me to cover this. I spent the rest of the day editing photos. Among the rediscoveries I came across today was this shot of a war memorial in Salford. While there are many to the fallen of the World Wars this one commemorates the Boer Wars (1899-1902). It is good to know that earlier conflicts and the tragedy of loss of life associated with them are still remembered too. Arthur Chappell

@Jessicalynnt there is an annual fund for getting fans of distinction to international conventions but I don't do half enough to deserve such an accolade

The street I lived on when I was a child had terraces that commemorated the Boar war two I remember were Powell terrace named after Colonel Baden Powell and Mafeking terrace the action that he was in. An old spinster lady that we used to call aunty Lizzy had two brothers who fought in the Boar war.

Good grief It is so cold for this time of year. I Hope you do not get blizzard conditions that stop you going to your convention. Enjoy your new camcorder!

It is but right to remember and honor those who had fallen during the wars; they sacrificed a lot for their country.

I have an idea the Boer War might have been the first war that Australians were involved in.
