Time to start burning leaves

We've had our first rains for the season and all the summer fire-bans have been lifted. We're now able to get out and burn up rubbish and leaves. We do some burning each year as it makes the property that bit safer when the summer comes and the inevitable bushfires. The leaves are wet from the rain of the last few days so the smoke is white and thick. We and our clothes smell of smoke too so I'll change shortly and put these clothes on tomorrow when we burn a bit more. Later this afternoon we are taking some of Vince's photos to a winery to be displayed for a week or two. He is quite excited about that as you can imagine. We haven't framed them as he doesn't really expect to sell any. They are mounted on adhesive white thick card then stuck with double sided tape to black card. I'll do a post and a photo once they are on the wall.

We've had a bit of rain lately too. How exciting for Vince's photos to be on display at the winery. Don't underestimate their sales potential!

It is quite exciting in a way but none of the artwork which has been on display has sold. But then the photos aren't two or three hundred dollars each either. I think he is hoping he might get some assignments from the display rather than selling too many. It has kept him occupied and happy for a while which has quite a value in itself. :)

I much prefer to compost my leaves, rather than burn them. I add freshly cut grass to the dry leaves and water in. It might take more time but it's much for the environment.

That's a good idea. Eucalypt leaves don't compost easily and we don't have a lot of grass to cut here but it's good that you're doing this.

But why burn? Does it not make summer more hotter? Why not convert it into compost by digging up a large space..and pushing it in...that way no fire, no smoke, no heat..and something organic...

I used to have a compost pile in the past. I don't have room now. I live in a matchbox and have a postage stamp yard.

It is winter here and it is nice and warm by the fires. Eucalypt leaves take forever to become compost. It isn't really an option.

do you leave the ash from the burnt leaves there? does burning affect the soil?

Yes we just leave the ash. Burning doesn't affect the soil.

oh that really IS exciting! I have a friend in Seattle who is an artist and whenever she finds a new place to show off her art, she takes photos of them on the walls and we all get so excited for her to make some sales! You never know! :)

Good luck with those photos! We have a law in TN that burning leaves is unlawful. Plus we can't burn between Oct.-May w/o a burn permit due to the winds during that time frame.

We can burn roughly May to October then it becomes too hot and dangerous. They haven't stopped us burning leaves yet.

We can burn our garbage here but not all, we can only to leaves, branches and other light materials as long as it is not a cellophane and plastics.

It's interesting what is and isn't allowed in different parts of the world. Is it because of the pollution, risk of a fire getting away or what?

@judyev I do hope they goes well for Vince. I remember well burning a firebreak in the bush around our house in Africa. Great source of excitement for us kids. We just had to make sure escaping snakes didn't come out way.

The more rubbish and leaves we burn now, the less there will be when the bushfire season returns. Kids love a fire don't they?

By any chance is he pricing them just in case there is some interest? I think it's a wonderful opportunity for him. I wish him much success.

We have a low price on them. He would sell them the jpeg file then they can do what they like with them. He'd really like a commission for a portrait sitting. No-one will commission a landscape but perhaps he'll sell one or two.

@JudyEv Oh sorry, I don't know where I got paintings. It seems like most of our fires here have been from regulated burns, not many are allowed to do that now.

Well I hope they do sell if that's what the goal is. =) I wouldn't burn here because we have a nosy neighbor so were worried about him calling the law on us.

haven't burned leaves in years, but haven't lived in an area they piled up like that. I do remember dad running them through the yard shredder thing, and letting the wind take the pieces

Eucalypt leaves ar hard to get rid off. They take forever to compost. I guess we could shred them but we don't have enough garden to put the shredded stuff on.

@Jessicalynnt I wouldn't have said they were thicker. There is a lot of oil in them which makes them very flammable once there is a bit of heat in a fire. We burn them simply to make the area around the house barer and safer from bushfire embers lighting up the rubbish (leaves). I know they take a long time to break down in compost and we don't have enough garden to need the compost.

Thanks for the good wishes. We don't really expect to sell much as there doesn't seem to be a lot of money around for extras at the moment. However he hopes he might get asked to take some portraits perhaps. It's all a bit of fun and an interest.

My father used to burn leaves, but our town ordinances won't allow us to do it. We empty them over a low area in our yard. I can smell you from here! Lol! Good luck with Vince's photos. I hope he gets to sell at least one.
