All makeup has an expiration time. If you use them longer or don't take care of them you could get infections.
Keep all makeup and such in a cool, dry place at all times. Not in moist places like the bathroom.
Moisturizers, toners, and lotions will last 6 months to a year. So I am using up mine. It is important to sanitize all brushes twice a year. Powder based blushes and foundations last about 2-3 years. Liquid foundations are good for about a year. Mascara lasts for about four months. If you smell a gas-like smell it is time to get rid of it. Eyeliners are good for about six months. Always keep them sharpened and with any top layers taken off. Eyeshadows last about six months. Lip balms last about a year. Then glosses and liners and regular lipsticks last about 1-2 years.
Shampoos, conditioners and rinses and body washes will last up to 3 years if not opened. If they are opened they will last about 2.

Ya, I used to have quite a collection of nail polish. Now I am hearing horror stories about it and now this info too.

What do you use to sanitize your brushes? I used to have a special brush cleaner, but I don't know that it was all that more special than a mild soap or detergent. I was wondering what others did.

That's all you really can use. If you use anything too strong it could make the hair fall out of the brush.

@celticeagle That's what I'm always afraid will happen if I get too experimental with the cleaning.

This is something I need to pay closer attention to. I wonder how many people get their "bad complexion" from using old stuff.

When I had make up, I changed it so often, I guess I never had to worry about it going bad. Agreed though, we must change out our make up as often as called for Celtic.
