Did you know that Giraffe's eat bones? Well I did not know that at all! During the editing of our Safari photos my eldest daughter stated that I had caught the 'tower of Giraffes" in great formation and that I had captured one Giraffe's eating a bone ??? Really I asked?? - this sighting is a rarity indeed. Well I never, so I decided to google it just to make sure that she was not yanking my chain. "Giraffe are the tallest herbivores in the world and feed of a variety of plant species. They are not carnivorous! However, when nutrients are lacking in their normal daily diets, and they become nutritionally stressed, they will eat bone to get phosphorous and calcium their bodies require." should I ever question my SMART GIRLS? Probably not! The facts are in google, and the proof is in my photograph. I am very pleased with my photograph which lead me to learn a few more interesting shenanigans of the animals of the wild. I didnt have a clue the Giraffe was munching on a bone! What are your thoughts?

All animals need minerals so I guess they will take whatever they can get. Can't be as easy as a salt lick though.

Yeah..I suppose...does that make horses and zebras also bone eaters? Do they collect bones like dogs? I heard some dogs can be brought up like vegetarians.

@vandana7 I've never heard of horses eating bone, but then I only know of ones that have a reasonably varied diet available. Dogs certainly can thrive on vegetarian food. Naturally they like all sorts of foods anyway; Pup was crazy about carrots and fruit of all sorts, especially pears.

@vandana7 well its a clean up operation I suppose, someone has to take out the trash - normally vultures do it, but they do the pickings and leave the bones for others to gnaw on

Brilliant picture, I had no idea they ate bones. If I* had told me that I would have been convinced she was 'yanking my chain'!!!

I never would have believed it. Whose bone is he eating? I have seen giraffes eating French Fries. We went to a Safari Land in Canada and went through the game preserves. All the giraffes were crowded around the car ahead of us. Kids fed them fries through the sun roof as you can't open your doors or get out of the car. They seemed to really love those fries.

@Inlemay That's a possibility I did not think of. I guess there would be a lot of bones in the wild. I wonder if they give them bones in the zoos and circuses.

I didn't know this fact and I love giraffes! However, I do know that dedicated carnivores, like cats, will sometimes go for non-meat. Melons is a frequent favorite for cats.

@Inlemay It makes sense, esp with their height needing more calcium and stuff but still odd, and now I am curious what type of bone that was, or more so, from what

I can believe that as horses, and I guess many animals, eat stuff when their diets are lacking in a certain substance.
