Oh the junk, all kinds of it. Mom was a hoarder and for the life of me I can't figure out why I didn't notice.
I remember her talking about the new thingy she needed because she didn't have enough drawers to put things in and 20 years ago it never occurred to me to ask why. Now I'm going through drawers filled with old wore out rubberbands, string, pieces of old leather keychains, cork screws, bottle tops, bits of material, candle leftovers, paperclips, nails, screws, plastic pieces of toys, plastic pieces of door bells or what not and coins .... and that list goes on.
The worst part is that both mice and roaches made their homes in all that junk.
I do feel a little like an intruder, this was mom's home for 52 years and all that junk was important to her. I think once she got into her late 80s she no longer cared about half the stuff I've been going through but wouldn't throw anything away because she might need it someday.
If it wasn't so funny I'd cry.

I played around with a picture of Boobear, she was looking really pleased with herself and I just happened to get a lucky shot ... that's a cat fer ya.

Most hoarders are pretty good at hiding their compulsion. My mom on the other hand got rid of everything including what I thought were things she should have kept!!

When elderly people have lived through times of war or depression they generally hoard because when that war or depression was happening they couldn't get some of those things. I recall mom talking about how hard it was to find paper to write on, naturally she hoarded paper, but as she got older she lost sight of what exactly she should be hoarding.
I have yet to figure out what she planned on doing with all those corks.

@rebelann My mom lived through the war and the depression and didn't care about keeping things. She didn't like old things, preferring new and modern. My antique collecting was something she never could understand.

Yeah, but I'd think your daughter would know that @crazyhorseladycx I knew not to just toss mas stuff out, lots of pretty things she'd gotten from family for her many birthdays over the years .... most of it was mailed to her.

I am so sorry to hear this. My parents have lots of things in their home as well. I am not sure exactly what they have crammed away but every closet, cabinet, and the attic are chock full. I know its hard on you emotionally as well. Wish I could come help you.

@rebelann I have asked her before but she would rather have help in other areas (mostly yard work). I doubt that if we cleaned it out if she would leave it clean. She would get more stuff to fill the voids.

Oh boy @Shellyann36 looks like you'll have to find a way to send her on a cruise just so you can get into the back part of whatever area, I wish I had done that.

thank you so much. It's gettin easier in a way, it's been almost 6 months and I'm just now going through her bedroom which I couldn't touch at first.
Maybe one day you could convince your mom to let you go through some of the old stuff with her, at least that way it won't be so hard on you.
How are the twins and lil Keith? Did big Keith get promoted?1 person likes this

I've taken to wearing gloves when going through her stuff. I feel bad that I have to throw a lot of it away, some of the nails and such could be useful but since I have my own mess here I'm just going to throw it all out. I am looking through it though, I found pennies and a dime today so who knows what else is mixed in with all that junk.

Nice picture/avatar, Ann.
My mom was a bit of a hoarder, too, but she wasn't as bad as my dad was.
When dad passed away, mom waited about six months and then started sorting through all the drawers in the house and then moved to the barns and then each shed on our property, sorting out things that should actually be kept and things that we didn't have a use for and hadn't in ten or fifteen years.
Once she finished inside buildings, then she tackled the piles of junk in different areas of our farm. She moved good stuff into one of the best sheds and piled everything else according to what it was made from. By the time she finished sorting everything like that, she called the salvage yards... I believe she said she received $1,500 total for all the junk around the farm.
Mom didn't hang onto large items. All her hoarding was in the form of books and costume jewelry.... After we sorted her jewelry into piles according to who bought it for her or who wanted what favorite piece, I discovered by accident that some of what we thought was costume jewelry wasn't. (shrug!)
IDK what they did about that new development. I quit helping sort things when they started fighting over more of her stuff. SMH!

Thank you.
I could have waited to go through her stuff but my sibling has pressured me to get a move on so we can sell her house and divvy the money ..... I'm taking in her kitties and right now I just don't have a place for those two.

Thanks @DaddyEvil I'm not sure how I'll do this but I am thinking first of my furbabies and if mom's can't fit in I might see about striking a bargain with the humane society to allow me to board them there, I'd be willing to pay them and provide the food and other things they need, boy, how quickly life slaps us upside the head, eh?

@rebelann Yeah, I understand about trying to integrate new pets into an established household. I hope everyone can get along. I would hate to hear that anyone got hurt from this.

My mom collects junk like that and I go behind her and toss it....I catch myself doing the same thing I guess because back in the day you never had the money to buy things and you never know what you might need so we kept it. I will be getting rid of stuff here for years after shes gone but thank god no mice or roaches....

More than wanting it is the energy one needs to go through to get rid of unwanted stuff.. Whoever does that to my stuff after I am gone will have a similar problem to deal with.
