In a perfect world, I'd love to take a martial art...

In a perfect world, where I had the time and money, I'd love to take a martial art. There are several studios around me, some qualified to teach not just one but several martial arts. I've looked at krav maga (spell?) before (it's the "street" martial art) and think it would be interesting to learn. A lot of the reasons why I don't? I work as a stock clerk, a physically demanding job. I'd like to learn a martial art, but it can be physically demanding as well and I've seen my sister suffer somewhat because of it. She works as a manager, but has to do stocking as she works in a small store. Having to deal with that, plus the workout she gets at her martial art of choice? It's not good. Of course there is no telling her that. I've thought of following along with youtube videos, sort of getting my "feet wet" but without the commitment a class would have. I can stop at anytime or choose a different martial art / fitness regimen without having to lose money etc. Have you ever taken a martial art?

I wanted Chris to teach me. He has a black belt in karate. But he only taught me two moves. I gave up asking him so I got a yoga/martial art workout dvd. I also have been doing some shaolin kung fu that is on youtube and I wanted to learn wing chun, but I need a partner to do it.

I have never heard of Wing Chun? It sounds interesting though. Makes me think it's revolves around kicks and arm moves? Most classes are a bit pricey for martial arts.

@ScribbledAdNauseum They say that Wing chun was invented by a woman. It's mostly what Bruce Lee used. Yeah they are pricy.

Hubby and his 2 sons took Karate when the boys were young. I was pregnant at the time and said I would join after our daughter was born, but I never did.

It can be a really expensive thing. I think my sister pays about $120.00 + the cost of the belts, new uniforms etc.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It has been so many years ago, I don't remember the cost, but I'm sure it wasn't cheap!

I think it's a beautiful thing, marital arts. There is so much required though, but it's definitely a character building thing.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I really do agree and a woman can defend herself too which would add self confidence

@Hatley Yes, and unfortunately in our world today, it is really important to know how to defend oneself.

Not martial arts schooling here. It would be interesting. I think Tai Chi would be a good one to start. It is more of a meditative one and would be a good way to get started I think.

@ScribbledAdNauseum ...If I were going to get into something like that I would do the Tai Chi first. For discipline and stamina.

I think you are right there. I imagine the moves are similar to various other martial arts. It would train the body and mind to the moves.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Many of them are really helpful and practical. You can practice it with a partner as long as you dont hurt each other.

@CaptAlbertWhisker I have a sister and nephew that do tae kwon do. I could practice with one of them, but I'm not sure that I'd want to do tae kwon do.

I have a cousin who took karate, I think another cousin did as well. My sister likes tae kwon do, her daughter took it for awhile, but it's just her and her son still taking it. She invited me, but I don't know if tae kwon do is for me. I've not seen any judo moves.

I don't know of a lot of women that take martial arts really. I guess there are plenty, but it's not really heard of here.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I had a friend who practiced a Japanese martial art, Kendo. She was great using the big Japanese sword.

Oh, that's great to know that your passion is martial arts. Well, I never had a chance to do martial art because for me it's hard work.
