Heard of, But Not Seen Before

Yellow bellied slider

Getting back into the swing of things after a couple of days of doing very little. Walking along the canal and enjoying some un-forecast sunshine, I saw an animal I have heard of living in the wild in the UK, but never seen before. I think it is a yellow-bellied slider. Originally from the south eastern US. I guess this one, which was about a foot long, was sold as a little terrapin pet and released when it became too big. She (I think) went for swim, doubtless fed up with me taking pictures.

@Ronrybs Do you remember the old disc cameras from back in the 1980s? I took a picture of my cat with one of this things once and got a perfect shot of her licking her paw. So, you never know what those little pocket cameras can do.

I know some of the bigger ones can be quite nasty. Don't think I'd have one

I think it's the whole reptile/amphibian thing. Most people just don't seem to like them.

She is a good sized turtle and probably wanted to go for a swim. They do become very large. My son in AZ has an African turtle that lives outside and digs a large tunnel under the ground, it is gigantic.

So long as he doesn't undermine the house, I guess he is not a problem!

Maybe she didn't want her pictures taken, but you were able to capture a good one.

More by luck than judgement! I took quite a lot of pictures, so one had to turn out okay.

At first I thought I was seeing things. Took quite a few shots, with one of her swimming away. Unless you know what it is not easy to tell

It is a shame when these exotic species are released in this way. They can cause a lot of problems.

I thought the winter would have finished it off, but some live in parts of the States where it gets a lot colder than here, so I guess they are staying.

In Florida, they have to go out and wrangle pythons and boa constrictors that are on the loose and shouldn't be.

I think that this kind of tortoise can be pretty nasty. I prefer not to be too close to those animals, they can cut your finger with a snap of their beak.

They do bite, but not nearly as bad as a snapping turtle.

That is pretty neat. Last time I saw a turtle outside, it was a little baby turtle in the rain on the walkway beside our garage. I had my fiance move it because one of our dogs is a bully to turtles

@Ronrybs Yes, especially if it is a snapping turtle. But, dogs will be dogs and mess with them still.

I have also been surprised to glimpse some sort of turtle slipping into our local pond! I didn't get as good a view of it as that though.

Shes beautiful, I used to have a red eared slider, he was about foot long as well and he was like a dog. I could go for a walk and he would follow, if he started to stray I just had to whistle and he would come back my way.

Cool sighting and photo. But not good for an animal not native to the area. Throws nature out of balance.

I'm not up on the names of turtles, but we had a few snapping turtles come out of the woods in our backyard and a box turtle lay her eggs in our front yard. I love nature. Great photo!

While I am not a super keen on turtles, I wouldn't mind having them nest in the front garden. I am very much pro leaving animals in peace
