This Young Man's Heart Ticks Very Loud

I just read an interesting article from the Daily Mail in U.K. about this young man of 27 who had a new mechanical valve put in last January. Now, his heart is ticking so loud that people think it is his watch doing that. I have a new mechanical aortic valve too and I can hear it but I am lucky that I do not sound like a clock, still I find it annoying when everything is quiet and I can hear it ticking. But I guess it is better to hear the ticking than being totally silent for ever. My own brother had an Open Heart surgery yesterday for the same thing and so far he is doing fine. So relieved!
Chris Lloyd, 27, from Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, had open heart surgery as a valve in his heart wasn't working - allowing blood to flow backwards through the organ.

i had a student who had an auntie, whose heart was also ticking loud. my cardiologist advised me to take my mitral valve changed to a mechanical one, or the valve of a pig. i am out of funds for the operation (a million pesos) so i just take my maintenance medicines to keep my heart from further damage

I can't believe that you have to pay for this yourself. Here in Canada, everything was covered and I am very grateful for that.

@ridingbet This is totally unfair for the people of your country.

@marlina maybe because my country has just a few cardiologist-surgeons and they specialize in foreign countries, so their professional fees are sky-high. we have a charity sweepstakes office that help the poor people get their treatment but i am not considered that category because i graduated nursing and a health care provider as well. maybe some discounts but not totally free.

I am glad that your brother's surgery went well. I did not know that you have a mechanical aortic valve. I think you must get the habit to hear the ticking.

@marlina I wonder how could I do with something like this. I cannot sleep if I hear even a very little noise.

I had no idea that mechanical valves made sounds. Or, for that matter, that you had one. Good vibes are being sent to your brother!

It is a good thing to know that your heart is working but hearing it so loud is not very pleasant.

@AbbyGreenhill I don't know about the inner ear giving this trouble.

@marlina Sometimes mine beats very fast and I can hear it very clear, but doc said that is caused due to my inner ear being messed up. Could be, I am not really sure.

I can see where that would be annoying, but I imagine he will get used to it and "tune it out". If he ever doesn't hear it is when he should be worried!

You are right, if we don't hear it, then there would be reason to worry about. But I must admit that it is annoying.

Well, I guess the good thing is that his heart is working. I hate when I can hear my heartbeat in my ears. That really annoys me..

I don't hear it in my ears but coming from the heart itself.

It sounded like in the cartoon film like "Jack and a cocoo clock heart". So that man might be sounding like that boy from that movie. He could hear the tick-tock of his heart. Glad that your brother surgery went well. I just learned you also had that..yes I think so it would be much relieving to hear that tick-tock sound from your heart than silence. For once it get silent,it would be forever.

That is amazing, but like he said, a ticking heart is a small price to pay for being alive. Will the sound ever soften so you won't hear it, or will you always have that sound because it's mechanical?

No, the surgeon told me that I will always hear it louder.

That could get quite annoying for the young man but he'd need to get over it as the alternative isn't good.

I guess a person would get used to after a bit, but might be rather annoying for a while.
