I can't throw away my birthday cards

I can't throw away my birthday cards or my Wedding Anniversary cards and they are giving me a storage problem. They are my souvenirs, whether of a long life, a happy marriage or simply longevity. Whatever it is I cannot put them in a box in the loft, they would not be accessible and I would never have the joy of looking at them again. So what to do? At present I am relying on a very large envelope and hoping to fit it in somewhere within reach where I can enjoy their loving sentiments again at my leisure and for my pleasure.

Can you not ask for them back? They must mean more to you than to him.

Yes, special letters from someone no longer around have even more meaning.

For me, birthday cards go adios. But not old love letters. I'm old enough that I used to get actual letters...in the mail...

Those I have not kept, much too personal to be read by anyone else but me.

I burned all my love letters from ex boyfriends when I met my husband.

@41CombedaleRoad I wouldn't mind if someone read mine. They're loving, but would probably seem "typical" to a third party.

@41CombedaleRoad It is definitely not an easy thing to do but will have to be done sooner or later.

I am afraid that will have to be my decision too sooner or later.

Uh oh, you must have known mom, I've been finding greeting cards from people who we lost touch with in the early 1960s, it's a real mess to go through and now I'm looking at the ones I've been keeping ..... I wonder if it's something most women do.

You old meanie, they are thoughts expressed on paper saying 'I love you' or 'I am remembering you on your birthday!'

@41CombedaleRoad so my answer to that is REMEMBER their well wishes and embrace the love and toss the paper!! Today is my Greek Friday - so Kalimera to you (you are not Greek by birth are you?)

@Inlemay I'm English married to a Greek we retired here ten years ago. Do you mean that today is a Greek lesson when you write 'my Greek Friday?'

You look young enough to manage that without the problem of a large box.

Could you get a cork board or something and make a collage? Several boards and put them on the wall?

@41CombedaleRoad ....I was brought up with a step dad who was that way.

I'm English celtic, we don't go in for such a show of affection or emotion. I'm saving some Christmas cards for a collage but that is as far as I can go.

I put all of my sentimental cards and letters in a shoe box. I can't toss them out either.

It is the best way to remember those you love and who love you too.

All these are your good memories. How I handle it. For the past 10 years I have taken a lot of pictures at home, in the jungles, villages and life in Cambodia. Almost 2 shoes boxes and others gifts. I need to move often. So one day I get a scanner and scan and store in my hard disc. Every time I need to refer I just open. If it is making you a problem, that is one solution. Life is short, not too much detach on material things. (That is my thought only) May be you can find some good way. Good Luck.

That is a very brilliant idea, if the cards do have to go I can scan them. Thanks.

I had trouble throwing mine away for a long time, too. I do have a small stack of them still that were given to me by special people, but not as many as I used to.

I'm afraid I'm not sentimental like that. I've kept a few special cards from when my children were young, but otherwise they go in the bin.

i've purty much e'ery card i've e'er received, e'en letters. thankfully i aint ne'er been that popular, so storage's no trouble, lol. i keep 'em'n the drawer under my bed. sometimes when i can't sleep, i'll pull'em out 'n peruse through 'em. particularly those my dad sent me when i was a wee young'un. big hugs!!

That's a lovely picture of you sitting in bed reading your dad's letters. I've nothing like that to cherish, not a letter or a card. I do have one letter from my mother and I treasure that.

@crazyhorseladycx The cards I get are few and far between now. Friends send email greetings which are more of a nuisance than a pleasure to receive. My daughter sends nice cards since she has grown a little older herself but my son rarely remembers.

I used to save all of those things, too, until I had to move into a smaller place and they all had to go. There's just no room anymore. I have them all in my heart now. :) I hope you won't have to get rid of yours, too!

Use them to decorate. Decoupage a table with them. Recycle them by sending the fronts to a charity. They make new cards for charitable resales out of them. Yes, they mean something to you, but they could help others.

I have a large moving box with b-day cards, mothers day and Christmas, I also have the children s, I tell myself that one day I'm going to organize them into albums and give them to the kids. Maybe I can make it a summer project and enlist my youngest daughters help while she is out of school. I too am sentimental and cards are expensive, for someone to take the time to pick the card out and spend that much money it seems awful to throw it away. We certainly wouldn't throw the gift away so why the card. My suggestion would be a photo album that you could put them in and then they would be handy and would take up a small space on the bookshelf. In my box I also have airline tickets, amusement park tickets and concert tickets. It's been 2 years since I was in the box I can't remember what all else is in there. Just little keepsakes that I thought would be something that each of the kids would enjoy to bring back childhood memories of fun times.

You are collecting for the family, not just yourself and I think your daughter would love to help you in the holidays.

I used to keep all my cards, but I don't any longer. It's great you have so many you cherish and want to look at and not put them on a shelf somewhere out of sight and mind.

I used to do that but then I got so many of them that they started to haunt me! The cards that I keep are ones that don't say "Happy Birthday" on them, or at least are funny in their own special way. I assorted a few of them and put them into a glass picture frame. That way they all have a different meaning to anyone who views them.

if it has value to you, especially sentimental value, you should keep them at all cost.
