Sometimes I wonder why the governments want to have a law about legal retirement age.
Most of the politicians, professors, scientists, and judges in the world are not adhering to the retirement age anyway.
To put in very bluntly, retirement age is just a nice name for expiry date.
When you reach the legal retirement age, you have reached the expiry date for full time employment in your current company.
It is very rare for a company to keep a person way past the retirement age.
In some cases, you are asked to go as part of early retirement.
Retirement age is really a very modern invention.
In the past, people work as long as they live. They may not do as much, but they still keep active physically and mentally.
It is really a silly idea to tell anyone that he is reaching his expiry date when he can live for another 20 to 40 years.

People should have the option to work as long as they want past what is currently the retirement age. Many people are still active and in good health long past "retirement" age

Yes, my point is that politicians have no retirement age, so why must they impose on us!
If they just an age and call it the drawn down age for social security, that is enough.
It does not have to mean retirement for those who still want to work.

In fact I am not quite sure the retirement age in my country now. But surely it is prolonged for several years. Namely I have to work for a longer time so that I can be retired. I just think that it is not a very good news because I am not supposed to work until that. You know the companies always prefer younger people and they don't have to pay for higher salaries for the elders. So I am unemployed, I may not have any income before I reach my retired age. So this is not a good news. This is why most of us don't want the retired age to be prolonged.

The best is not to have a retirement age at all.
I think for the case of China, you need not worry about the younger ones taking over the jobs.
The birth rate is so long, and there are not enough young people to take over all the jobs.
Sooner or later, the companies will have to accept people in their 70s or 80s to work.

@scheng1 In fact most of us are worried about that we can't be retired earlier. As we are not sure whether we are still employed at that time. If not, we don't have any income before we are retired. So we prefer that we can get retired early and therefore it is good for the youngs since they can find jobs easily.

@youless I think that is the least of the worries.
With the one-child policy in place for so many years, you have just 1 adult taking over the jobs of 2 adults in the future.
There is no need to worry about young people not getting employed.
You have to worry that the government will keep on changing the retirement age or the age to get the pension.

If those people are less "functional", the company will not even wait till retirement age to get rid of them.
They will get rid of them long ago.
In this world, old people are less likely to get jobs, and if they can get jobs, the jobs will be very lowly paid.

It depends on the work environment.
Some places are so stifling that people look to get out while others value employees for their real worth.
Sometimes, the younger employees have a condescending attitude towards the older that they are just putting up with them while the reality could be the other way!
I am past the retirement age and work on part time basis.
My take right through has been to give more than take and do my best.
I feel it is better to go slow after a certain age - siva

The problem starts when they start to outsource a lot of functions.
When government starts to do that in civil service, that is the end of loyalty and a great workplace environment.
There is no job security and the older ones with higher salary are the first to go.
