Bench my son made

United States
May 23, 2016 12:33pm CST
My son made this bench at school, so last week I picked it up and placed it where the old, falling apart bench, was. Today, my son and I transplanted some tomato and cucumbers, then then I thought, why not place my aloe vera on the bench, and maybe some mint on the side? So that is what we did, (picture will be uploaded on first reply) on the left is spearmint and the right is peppermint. The two pots with only dirt has wildflower seeds, so later this summer I will have some colorful foliage in front of my house.

Hi @Carmelanirel2 ! That turned out really nice and looks perfect right where you put it! I've been wanting to put some kind of bench (actually a few of them) on our back porch, but haven't found the right ones. Perhaps we should hire your son to make them for us! How've you been?

@much2say!!! It has been forever since I seen you around, how are you doing? I am great. I earned my degree last December, but the ceremony was just a couple weeks ago, so I feel it is officially official... As for my son making one, I did ask him if he enjoyed making it, hoping I could guide him into creating some really cool wooden furniture, but he said he didn't like. So sorry, he won't make anymore unless he has to for a grade.

@Carmelanirel2 Oh wow, well congratulations on your official graduation . . . woo hoo!!! What an accomplishment!!! Awwww, he didn't like the process? Oh my gosh, I would love learning to do more with furniture - I would have so many ideas for it - like cool furniture like you said. That would be cool to have some matching pieces to go with his bench - nudge nudge !

@much2say Well I don't blame him, I didn't like making some thing in school either, like the planter in metal shop and the giraffe (I only sanded and stained it) in wood shop. However, I did like sewing my own shirt, the problem is, I am not good at sewing.

Oh ok by scrolling down to find the photo I see that you are not going to actually use it to sit on you are going to use it as decoration basically. This bench is awesome. I would love to have made something like that when I was in school.

@Carmelanirel2 Oh so you did figure out what is wrong with your aloe that is awesome. I am having a hard time keeping my children's two new cactus's alive that we bought at walmart. I cannot figure out what is wrong that they keep dropping petals or whatever they are called off. I need to look up the type of cactus it is and find out how to care for it correctly. It doesn't say on the plant what kind it is so it might take me awhile.

Actually I am using it now to sit on because the aloe I placed there was going into shock because they were placed in direct sun too soon. So the plants are back inside and I do like that I have a place to sit in front, just not during a hot and humid day. lol

@changjiangzhibin89 I do too, the tea is wonderful for headaches and my son drinks the tea when his throat feels sore.

Thank you, though he still resists doing work if he can.. lol... The colorful foliage would be when the wildflowers grow and bloom.

Thank you, unfortunately he had to make it in class because when I asked if he enjoyed making it (so I could encourage him to make more products) he said no.

@TiarasOceanView Yes it would, but I'm glad he made it, I needed a nicer bench than the ugly one I had. I guess the ugly one is going in the backyard by the berry bushes, according to my husband.

Thank you. Seems that mint is the only herb I can keep going. I had edible lavender last year and was able to use some of it, but the plant itself never flowered and seeded to spread. (Unless that kind doesn't spread, not sure)

@crazyhorseladycx I'm not sure about the lavender, I bought it at a local nursery, so they probably have the same thing. If I ever make it there and find the kind I had, I should ask about how to get it to reproduce.

That will be nice to have some color, I wish my deck weren't so shady so I could have flowers.

There are plenty of shade loving flowers, though since I have a lot of sun, I am not sure what.

@RubyHawk I never heard of the snake plant and I actually have some shade loving flowers, one if which is lily of the valley. (Can't remember the name of the others) and you can have a nice garden if you have the right plants for your area.

@kaka135 Yes, he wants to go into robotics, but it wouldn't hurt for him to have a creative form of skill, but he doesn't see how important it can be.

No, he won't, he said he didn't enjoy making it, so unless he is in another class where he has to, he won't make any more furniture.

OH! So THAT is the bench you placed the Aloe on! Hmmm... I think it would have looked very nice growing on that bench! (Well, with some shade for the Aloe, of course.) Your son did a nice job!

Hi @DaddyEvil,. yes, this is the bench my aloe was on, but is not inside. I can't remember if it has been a week now since I made that mistake, but later I will take a picture of what is going on now and perhaps most of the plant is okay and I can slowly introduce them to the outdoors again.

Thanks, I debated on whether to use it for plants, or for me to sit and relax. Since the front of the house faces south and there is no protection from the sun, I thought my plants would benefit more than I would. Of course when the temps start dropping this fall, I might use it then to sit and enjoy the colorful leaves on the trees.
