Why do I spend $55 every 2 weeks on organic produce?

Some people, even here, have told me that it is way too expensive and that they wouldn't ever spend that kind of money on a box of organic fruits and vegetables every other week. I think it is worth it because: 1) These fruits and vegetables are not treated with pesticides and other types of chemicals which means that they are better for my health and the health of the environment and ecosystem. 2) Because the boxes change each week, we have no control over what is sent to us. This forces us to broaden our diets and eat things that I wouldn't normally buy like kale, sweet potatoes, broccoli rabe, Swiss chard, tomatoes, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, etc. We'll eat them but they don't often find their way onto my shopping list. I think that this is a great way to get more vitamins, minerals, and nutrients into our diets. 3) This kind of piggybacks off of #2 but we have no control over what we get so we get all sorts of stuff, some things I never would have bought and some I never heard of before. These things include turnips, beets, kohlrabi, kiwi berries, ramps, garlic scapes, green garlic, lemongrass, rutabagas, etc. When you spend that kind of money on food, you are willing to be open-minded and try it all which, again, also broadens the diet. There have been times when money has gotten tight and I've had to stop being a part of the co-op. In fact, I've had to stop a couple of times, but I've always re-joined as soon as I could because I really do believe that it does good things for our health.

I think this is a good idea but I probably wouldn't do it. There are only two of us; we're not big eaters and the food we buy is local and although not certified organic isn't far off it. I think that fact that you try more foods now is a big plus.

I follow you completely, but I find that it is a bit expensive. I have a costumer membership to a group of organic producers of my area since about 4 years. For 10 Euros/week, about $11, I receive a full basket of organic fruits and vegetables from their farms. I have no choice on the content of the basket, and I cannot tell that I like everything, but I have discovered like this things that I had never eaten before, like some old varieties of apples and pears or parsnips. I can cancel/interrupt the subscription at any moment with a phone call.

@NJChicaa It is not cheap in organic shops. I heard about this from a friend.
