Memorial Day vs. Veterans Day

United States
May 29, 2016 12:43pm CST
Yesterday 1,500 scouts placed US flags on 50,000 graves at the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN. It was an exercise in history for them and a way to educate them as to the significance of Memorial Day. Memorial Day was intended as a day to honor those who served our country but are long longer alive. Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank our servicemen and woman for protecting our country and its people. Some people tend to get that mixed up and I've heard many current or former military get upset over people not understanding the difference. Photo is mine.

I can make the difference, a Memorial is always for people who are no more alive.

@AbbyGreenhill I cannot believe that people cannot make the difference.

@LadyDuck If everyone in the world was 'smart' we would have so many less problems to worry about LOL

Even stuff the papers are posting on FB have it wrong, that's a little worrisome.

I have always wondered what the difference is, and this explains it quite well. On November 11th we have Remembrance Day which is a day that we Canadians set aside to honour our war heroes. I think that is the same day that you have Veterans Day.

Yes, you are absolutely right - we celebrate Veterans Day 11/11...I just looked at the calendar and it also indicated Remembrance Day in CA,

@marlina I always address my Christmas cards on that day and mail them near the end of the month so that they arrive for December 1st, and on the day after Remembrance Day I put our Christmas wreath up on the front door. I do it after out of respect, we should never ever forget.

It never occurred to me that might bother those in the service, but that makes sense.

That is good to clarify it for those who do not know.

I know some do, but honestly, I like to give respect to them all on both days, they deserve more than just 2

My father was military all the way - served in Army reserves and for many many years after the war. So respect for military was instilled in me at a young age.

Scouts mean boy scouts? Girl scouts?

Cub Scouts - a little younger than boy scouts.

I am prior service and I used to get upset when people confused the two holidays. Now I don't let it bother me because I realize the person is making an effort to recognize the contribution made to their liberty by those who served, whether deceased, veterans, or still serving.

I've seen some on Facebook get really nasty and upset about it.

Not sure why they get upset about this. All they have to do is learn the difference on the holiday.

The people who get upset are those who do know the difference.
