Greetings from Delhi arrived yesterday afternoon and now I am really pleased with a full letterbox this month.
Wow I have had over ten postcards arrive, two parcels and a letter from a friend.
Who could be so lucky as to have so much snail mail in one month?
Roger has been collecting data on bees in Indian it seems, not quite sure what that entails but I am certain he will send me more info in a nice long email soon. He is such a wonderful traveling friend that never forgets to send me greetings from wherever he finds himself doing volunteer work with "Mother Earth".
His message is - "The spring has the Apple Orchids full of blossoms and the scenery is lovely, just very steep mountains"
Now I have never been to India and I know there are many Indian followers on myLot, so i shall try to do my postcard justcie by just stating facts.
"India Gate, even though a war memorial, evokes the architectural style of the triumphal arch like the Arch of Constantine, outside the Colosseum in Rome, and is often compared to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the Gateway of India in Mumbai. It was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens"
It was established in 1921 and was part of the work of the Imperial War Graves Commission, which came into existence in December 1917 for building war graves and memorials to soldiers killed in the First World War."
This inscription is found on the Gate:
"To the dead of the Indian armies who fell honoured in France and Flanders, Mesopotamia and Persia, East Africa, Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near and the far-east and in sacred memory also of those whose names are recorded and who fell in Indian or the North-west Frontier and during the Third-Afgan War.
The India Gate, which is illuminated every evening, from 19:00 to 21:30, is a major tourist attraction."
Below it burns the Amor Jyoti, the eternal flame in tribute to all martyred soldiers.
How absolutely fascinating that i have toured a little of Delhi this morning, reading through the wikipedia to find just enough facts to tickle your interest.
Those that know more, may leave some lovely comments for all to read.

It is nice to hear that you are in New Delhi and you have visited icon of New Delhi i.e. India Gate. India Gate is one of the best monuments in New Delhi and many visitors could be seen visiting throughout the year. Although, nowadays it is not advisable to visit this place during day time because New Delhi is reeling under scorching heat and it is difficult to go out during day time. It could better be seen early in the morning or late in the evening. It is near to my office so I cross India Gate almost every day while coming back from my office.

@Inlemay - I stand corrected, it is your friend Roger who sent you the postcard about India Gate. I mistook it as your visit to India Gate.

@dpk262006 No harm done, I just didnt want anyone to think that I was there, rather that my friend had sent me greetings - I would love to go there one day too

I know nothing about India, so these facts are all new to me. My wife did travel there in another life (when she lived and taught in Turkey) and loved it.

@Inlemay Yes, I know what you mean. I too am beginning to look up other countries and information as I am getting to know people from these places.
India is a vast country and there are many different types of climates, culture, languages, religion. Your friend must be travelling through the NorthWest.
I live in Assam, in the North -East.Let me know if he visits this part.

I understand statues and tributes, but always wondered why an archway that stands alone (not like through a building or something that has purpose in of itself) and why one for giants
