About our deck...

I really want to scream right now, but I'm posting on here instead. Hubby has purchased the wood to build a deck. Like I have said before, he hasn't a clue what he is doing. He did say he would have to "paint" the wood first. I said, no, you stain it to protect it from the elements. It should be a natural wood colour. See the attached picture? (Sorry, I took it through the screen because I didn't want hubby to see me taking it). The freaking stain is orange!!!! I'm not kidding. He is wearing an orange ball cap while he is doing this and it is the same damn colour! I asked him what the heck he was doing and he said it matches the house. What the heck? Our house has creamed colour siding. What house is he talking about? How do I get him to stop? The deck that was here before was, like, red. It was ugly. This, oh my Lord, is uglier. A couple of thousand dollars worth of wood and he is turning it into a pumpkin.

There are all different colors of stains and deck paint. I suppose you should feel lucky he's not painting it purple with pink polka-dots.

All I can do is hope it changes when it has dried. He's not listening to me. He had consulted with my BIL but obviously they didn't talk about staining. I texted the pic to my BIL and he said, "I would stain it after the deck was built." Yeah, well, hubby don't listen to no one. Grrrr....

@patgalca Maybe they could turn the boards over and start over.

@patgalca Yes, I know some men (and women, too) become very hard of hearing if they don't want to hear something.

I'm sorry! I hope it doesn't look terrible when he's finished with it. =(

Yeah, I'm hoping it will dry into a different colour.

That looks a lot like the sealer that my husband used when he redid the cargo trailer. It is a good quality product, not my favorite color. Perhaps, once he has assembled the deck you can go over it with a more brown shade of sealer.

He already gave some boards a second coat and those pieces are looking better. I just posted an updated photo. He will give the whole deck a second coat once built.

Some men suffer from a psychological disease I refer to as 'Macho Extremis"(my term). They would rather see the house burn down on its foundation than admit that they don't know how to do something. Hold your breath and time will let him see the error of his ways.

He will never see the error of his ways, until we bring in a realtor to look at the house and they point out what's wrong with the place. That won't be happening anytime soon.

Wow, that is rough. There are many shades and colors of stain. He could use something more conservative than orange. Is there someone he respects that could tell him that is not lovely?

He had spoken to my BIL though I don't think they spoke about staining. I texted the photo to my BIL and the only thing he said was that he would stain it after he built it. He was going to build the deck for us but then he got a job and is now unavailable.

Hopefully it will weather into a better colour. It must be so disappointing.

I was hoping that too but isn't the purpose of staining the wood is so that it won't weather?

@JudyEv Hopefully sooner rather than later.

@patgalca I think my 'weather' has a different meaning to yours. I was thinking that whatever the stain colour, over time it becomes something a little different, in which case it may not look so orange in time.
