Hug an old lady day.

Greece

Moving on from hugging cats I thought one should try ' hugging an old lady day' next as we all seem so much in favour of sharing a little love. As you know I live in Greece and I am not fluent in Greek which limits my ability to communicate with the older generation here who do not speak English. A couple of days ago I was walking in the town and an elderly lady, dressed all in black (a widow) came walking slowly towards me. She looked so miserable my heart was touched. I smiled, she did not smile back, but she did look at me. So as we got close I hugged her and kissed her (both cheeks Greek fashion). She gave me such a sweet almost toothless smile and she certainly enjoyed that passing hug. My husband looked at me and said 'Why did you do that?' And I could think of no other reply than 'I wanted to'. I'm glad I did, she walked away smiling and so did I.

That is nice. I would wonder why your husband had to ask.

My husband is not a hugger, so it seemed a strange thing to him.

Good for you, let's hope there are lots like us around with an eye for a lonely old lady.

Good for you, but I wouldn't have done that with a complete stranger. I'm not a hugger, basically.

I don't think I would have done it in England, but then I would have said something, here in Greece I have a handicap in that respect.

I'm not sure that hugging men, even old ones, is such a good idea in Greece...

i'm so glad'ja hugged her! some folks might find't strange to hug strangers, but sometimes they're the ones who need such the most. perhaps she'd "seen" yer smile, but with such a heavy heart'd not the ability to return such. no doubt'cha made her day. human touch's sorely taken fer granted.

I lived alone for 6 years and although I was in my 30s I remember that a small act of kindness could make all the difference to my day.

What a lovely thing to do! I'm glad it turned out positively and that she didn't hit you with her walking stick.
