I wonder what I had for lunch today?

I found this afternoon quite entertaining. There is a small establishment called “Cafe Corner” a few blocks from my hotel, which I visited earlier. The only menu that they had was a small hand written one in Turkish, which was totally meaningless to me. The only girl there who spoke English was unable to translate the menu, so I said that I would have a coffee and whatever she chose to bring me to eat. It appeared to be some form of baked pastry with a mixture of contents that I could not recognise, served along with french fries and sliced tomato. It was quite palatable, but I still have no idea what it was.

You're braver than me - I won't touch anything if I don't know what it is. Come to think of it I won't touch a lot of things when I do know what it is. Glad you found it palatable.

I would have been content even if it was not to my liking because the lady was trying to be helpful. I remember visiting a bar in Siberia many years ago. The menu was in Cyrillic script and the staff could not speak English. When it became clear that we were at a loss, the waitress chose to bring us drinks anyway. Each time we signalled for another drink she came with something different. I could tell that each drink contained vodka, but was unable to identify the other items. We spent several hours there and I still have no idea what I drank.

@jaboUK Not too much because it was a long time ago when I used to work in the pubs, so I was a regular drinker in those days.

@Asylum Were you drunk by the time you finished all those drinks?

Well, at least you recognized the french fries and sliced tomato, so you have that much going for you! And if you're still alive and kicking and able to read this, then whatever mystery food you had didn't kill you!

I am probably too dammed lazy to bother having food poisoning, so that was never a worry.

Now if you were me you would have taken a photo of it and I am sure someone on here could have told you exactly what you were eating. I am adventurous so I would not mind just giving it a try!!

@Asylum I am fairly careful with what I eat. If I can not identify it I am afraid it goes no where near my gob!

@garymarsh6 I am so with you on that. My tummy started being picky when I was 17. It has become more obnoxious in the last 20 years. I still dine out regularly, but ask lots of questions.

It would be safe to assume they would serve their most popular item on the menu.

Or possibly whatever was not selling very well at the time, depending on how selfish they were.

@Asylum _That's also possible. I guess it's a risk you have to take if your hungry. Or you can look for another place to eat where the menu is in English and the staff are able to communicate with you.

When I visited Greece I tried several local dishes, some were quite good but a few were terrible. Of course the only way to know is to try them in the first place.

in all your travels, have you ever eaten or drank anything that your body reacted negatively to? i'm hoping they gave you the bestseller. or maybe they gave you what "foreigners" usually order there. have you tried the real turkish delights yet?

Nothing has ever caused me any problems, but I have tried many meals that turned out not very palatable. That is all part of life and we cannot dislike something before we try it.

I'd rather leave if they couldn't interpret the menu for me. I might end up having allergies or something.

Was the outside filo paste filled with a mix of meat, spices and vegetables? May be a Kiymali Borek. I like Turkish food, it's not too bad.

@Asylum You are discovering new specialties. As sweet pastries, I like baklava, even if they are a bit too sweet, but I do not like the lokum, it's made of gel, starch and sugar, sticky!

You are very lucky to have a digestive system that allows you to experiment. I would starve. Actually, I wouldn't, because I wouldn't go anywhere without the ability to translate the ingredients of a meal. Won't your phone do that for you?

A very good point, but even if it translated the name of the dish there may not be an English equivalent.

@Asylum I used to have a book in French and in German that didn't just translate the words in the name of food dish, but also gave the ingredients and how it was prepared. Cannot remember the name of the book. It would be a fabulous app. Make someone with programming skills a great deal of money. Too bad I'm not that person.

That kind of sucks because if you liked it you wouldn't be able to order it again seeing and you aren't sure what it was that they gave you and the language barrier doesn't help.
