28 John Dalton Street M2 6HQ A few people have asked me about this intriguing sign when I have used it to illustrate other features online. It’s a sign that seems at an initial glance to have been influenced by Secular Humanism and atheism, in its conflict with the leading monotheistic religions. The Darwinian Ape (a Chimpanzee) holds up an apple, which might or might not be a reference to the fruit Adam and Eve took without permission in the book of Genesis. A pub sign about religion and atheism or is it? There are lots of bars with church and religion associations, but one showing recognition of doubt, irreverence and agnosticism is relatively rare. The ape sits on a beer barrel under the apple tree, with a beer at his feet too, a creature evolving human tastes and vices. Apes are partial to fruit so the image is not without some air of realism too. A colourful shiny sign that is awkward to capture on photo properly due to the signage of neighbouring properties obstructing the view. The pub is a popular venue for meetings, burlesque events, comedy, etc. In fact, the pub name is a randomly constructed one. Many pub names have no real history or origin. In some cases, two different things will be put together to generate a name virtually at random, Pig & Phone Box, Ship & Sheep, etc., to make two up of my own almost instantly. The Ape And Apple looks like an old fashioned traditional bar but it is actually quite modern, opening in 1997. Before then it was a bank. Arthur Chappell

I'm disappointed that it's a randomly constructed name.

Odd I wouldn't have thought any of that except the last about apes liking fruit. Course I don't look for religion any where.

I think you have put forward some very good ideas as to what this sign might be suggesting. I hadn't even thought about all the various meanings that could be construed from this.

I do like the sign, though. Of course, I like monkeys and apes.

Despite knowing the area I do not know the pub. It was obviously a recent establishment because the random naming is a fairly recent trend.

I discovered pubs when I lived in Cape Town, South Africa, 1997-1999. I fell in love with them immediately. Too bad we have nothing like them here in the US.

Interesting bar sign. I really like it and it seems like a cool place. I wonder if people take the time to think about everything you just mentioned.
