Writing Our Memoirs

Today I attended the first meeting of a newly formed memoir writing group. I was hesitant about going, as I have belonged to a memoir writing group before, consisting of women who wanted to write about successful they had been in their lives. I was also hesitant because, as some of you know, I have a publishe memoir of my school life in the 1950s.
I can now say, having been to the meeting, I am excited. I couldn't have wished for a more sincere group of people. Each of us had different reasons for being there. Each of us had different levels of writing experience. And each of us had different reasons for being at the group in the first place.
But, much to my excitement, the group gelled very quickly. This is a writing group that is going to work, not only for me, but I believe each and every one of us. I am really looking forward to continuing with this group and enjoying the writing that is going to emerge from the group.
Our past is important. Whether we write it for family members, for a wider audience, or just for ourselves, our past history should be recorded.
Have you ever tried writing down the stories of your past?

I have only written diaries about our travels. Every time we traveled I brought with me a copybook and every evening, before going to sleep I wrote everything we did during the day, our experiences, the restaurants where we had our lunch and dinner. I should write about my young years too.

Hi @LadyDuck!
It is a good way for us to make sure we do not forget every details on our trip. I also tried to bring a notebook and pen with me when I travelled but the problem is I got so tired at night that I just wanted to sleep. I write the memories after weeks of our travel and the problem is that I tend to forget some details so I still ask my boyfriend for some information.

But do keep writing them! The group today seemed to be much the same, there because they hoped they may one day do something with their various stories. No one else knows what life was like in our childhood and teens except us, those who have experienced it.

I have a blog which I don't promote where I write stories for my children to read someday.

@valmnz I had a lot of stories I had written down and I decided to put them in one place and a blog seemed like a good idea.

I think it's so important to write down memories. I wish I would have asked my grandparents about their memories so I could write about them for them.

That's so interesting that it skips. My generation seems to be more romantic, with all the Tumblr-type pictures we're obsessed with.

I have tried it but it was not published yet. I started it when we travel to Singapore last year. I wrote every detail that I remember and if there are some instances I could not remember some place or food that we ate, I asked my partner for it. I am lucky if he still can remember it but if not, its okay. I am thinking of putting up a blog where I can record all our travel experiences.
