Despite their history many pubs lack a pub sign, and a text-book example of this is Chorlton’s Sedge Lynn in South Manchester. It was actually built specially not to be a pub. No, you didn’t misread that – the Sedge Lynn was intended to be a non-pub. The Sedge Lynn was a purpose built billiards hall. The Temperance Movement opponents of demon drink showed that you didn’t need the booze to play billiards, or other sports. The Sedge Lynn name was actually that of a house next door to the pub, though the house was replaced by a cinema, itself now closed. The Wetherspoons owned pub reclaimed the territory for drinkers and irony of ironies it does not have billiards or pool tables within. Sadly, it also lacks signage, leaving me to wonder what it might show if it had a sign. Depicting billiards might confuse people expecting to get a game on the baize tables inside. Depicting an absence of beer might also send out the wrong message, so the sign ought to depict the buildings clever aerodrome arch style architecture. Arthur Chappell

The poor people who envisaged it as a billiards hall with drink must be turning in their graves.

Wetherspoons pubs have a policy of no sports or music in their bars @JudyEv virtually any other owners would add at least a pool table

@arthurchappell That's a bit different! No sports and/or music? What are they promoting I wonder? Mobile phone chats or conversation maybe? That would be something new! :)

@arthurchappell That seems a business killer. Sports is a big draw. No one will go to their pub when the big match is on.

No sign but that is a very attractive building, at least that's what I get from the photo.

It's a shame that there is no sign, because this building is beautiful.

It is a lovely building and doesn't really need a sign.

Huh. I was beginning to think that all pubs have a sign. You're right, I wonder what this sign would depict.

This does surprise me because I would have expected that every pub had a sign of some sort.
