Sleep Deprived

On average, I get around 5 hours of sleep a day. I have read several articles saying that it isn't good for the body. We all need at least 8 hours of sleep. It's 415am here and I've been awake since 2am. I rarely get a good night's sleep and I am easily roused from bed by the slightest noise. I sense something is off in my system. What do you think I should do to get the recommended 8 hours? Some suggest taking melatonin. I plan to do that later. For now, I'm waiting for the alarm to ring so I can wake up my wife and kids and get ready for school.

I definitely need more than 5 hours per night. However this suggestion that everyone needs 8 hours is complete rubbish. It varies from one individual to another. Many people sleep far less per night on average, while others may require longer.

Why do doctors recommend 8 hours?

@Beatburn Some doctors do, but not all of them.

I only get 6/7 hours sleep and I'm fine with that.

I think it varies with each person. I mean, I think I need more than the usual and would like to take naps once in a while.

30 to an hour regular workout in the morning will help induce good sleep at night. And how about sleeping with white noise? I mean soft music so that you won't be disturbed by other noise.

I noticed if I get some exercise like an early morning run, I sleep better. I should find time for exercise!

Try to relax. Perhaps try a warm bad or an intriguing book. I hope you're able to rest soon.

You might also take magnesium. A lot of Americans do not have enough magnesium in their bodies and it makes it hard for them to sleep; they may feel nervous or irritable, too.

Really? Magnesium? I haven't heard of that. What counts for the lack of magnesium?

I have insomnia, drinking milk with ginger powder everyday and avoiding coffee and coke (or any black soda) helped me

Same here @AkoPinay And yet I can't help but drink coffee when it is available. I wonder how all those I see in coffee shops all over the metro, sleep.

Ive trained myself to sleep at least 8hrs a day. When it's time to sleep, i sleep. Not a single task will keep me from doing it. When i was still working, having a regular shift, i set a schedule when to shutdown.

Good for you. I tend to forego sleep when I am enjoying what I watch or am out with friends.

I have problem sleeping too and I tried everything I drink milk, I use sleep sounds, I take melatonin but I still have problem sleeping. The one thing I did is to tire myself the whole day. You should be very tired. You can also tire your eyes by reading a lot. For sure you will have deep sleep.

I have the same exact problem. Fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis is what is causing me not to sleep. Like you, I only get about 3-4 hours of sleep a night. I do take a nap most days to try and compensate for it.

Hmmm... I usually manage five to six hours of sleep... I tend to take catnaps throughout my day and night. (That's why I tend to be on myLot at different and odd seeming times.) Here is a chart with recommendations.
Ever wonder how much sleep you really need? We have done extensive research on this topic, find it all out on National Sleep Foundation website.

Whoa that's too early. Hmmm I also wake up early if I go to bed too early. So, I go to sleep a little later like 11 or 12 midnight. I usually get 5 to 6 hours of sleep, too. I hope I can also have 8 hours of sleep.

@Beatburn yup, I also want to sleep longer but when I am at home, I can't. My mother wakes me up. And I can't take naps during the day.

Sometimes I feel like taking a nap especially late in the afternoons. I think my double dose of coffee in a day isn't helping.

I think you should try the melatonin and magnesium. If those don't work, you may want to talk to your doctor about sleep medication. I used to sleep for only about 5 hours a night and had to go on sleep medication which made a huge difference for me.

I am reminding myself to really try melatonin. I woke up again at 2am today!
