Should children get punished if they didn’t do their homework? Why?

I am reminiscing the past events of my primary years in school. I was in grade 6 that time and I forgot to do my Science homework. I was in a panic because my Science is a well-known terror in the class. Most of the time, her style is to check our homework and be called in front of the class. As I expected, she punished me by standing in front of the class for the whole period. It is a really embarrassing moment. On the other hand, I feel lucky because I didn’t see her scary looks that time. Do you have such kind of punishment before? Photo Credit: pixabay.com

I never punish my kids in homework. If they do not want to do this. Then the question is why, something wrong,do you need help etc. This is the way we do it.Or tell them go out for a few minutes reflect and back in.Very simple. No punishment what so ever

agree with this. Punishment can only give negative effects.

That's really an ideal thing to do. I do think that punishment is not the answer and cannot make the students learn something.

It is nice to hear that. I am not sure why this is the way my teachers do.

Well I don't think I've had any kind of punishment in school. I love studying. I think punishment depends on the degree of not doing homeworks? If they don't do it at all then something needs to be done.

@Shavkat Oh but it's a given that students clean the school room and toilets as far as I remember.

I also witnessed that some of my classmates clean the toilets for not doing their homework.

I think the parents should punish the kids for not doing their homework. What that teacher did to you was horrible. No kid deserves to be embarrassed like that. From my experience, if you didn't do your homework then you get a failing grade and then you move on. Simple. The parents should be the ones to do something with their child if they did not complete their homework or even try to complete it.

I totally agree with you. This particular teacher had punished one of my classmates. The parents went to school to file a formal complaint against her. That's the reason why she starts to change her treatment to the students.

I would prefer to be scolded than to experience corporal punishment. That's really unacceptable.

I never had any punishment regarding schoolwork. A bit of scolding perhaps, but never any body or mental harm. I am not siding with anyone who gives harsh punishment to students who dont do their homework. It is probably better to explain to them why not doing homework is bad - especially as a student. In your example, you clearly has been negatively affected by that experience and it doesn't help - it only gave you a bad experience and not the reason for it So i advocate for not punishing but explaining instead of the importance of something. That way it can give a positive experience instead of a negative one.

There is really a negative effect, my dear friend. I became so timid and even entering high school days. However, I had to break myself from being such personality. Since it is not healthy to always keeping oneself in silence. That's the reason why I am monitoring the my little niece's teachers. Sometimes I can hear something that my niece is trying to mimic her teachers at school.

When I'm in elementary grades most of my teachers are lazy they don't give much assignments. But I have one teacher that punish me with a stick for not bringing a toy to describe in our English class. When I'm in highschool I'm in a private school and I started doing assignments and reviewing for exam. I'm lazy and easy go lucky in my elementary days

I am a scholar in high school. I am like you and spend time studying so hard. I can't afford to lose my scholarship. It is a great help for my parents. I got matured early during my high school days.

We would usually get punished if we didn't do our homework. I think mostly we had to stay in during the breaks and do the homework plus some extra work.

I think that is a good way to have punishment to students. They can have extra homework.

I was a very quiet child and I always had my homework, so I was lucky enough not to get punished in school.

Such kind of punish is strictly prohibited now. My experience from my teacher is that sharp nails that bite my skin.
