Animal Cruelty Charges Result in Banning of Greyhound Racing in New South Wales, Australia

There is turmoil at the moment in the greyhound racing industry in Australia. New South Wales has banned the sport completely following serious allegations of abuse and ill-treatment of animals, in particular live baiting using rabbits, possums and baby pigs. These are tied to lures when training the dogs and are often torn apart while tied to the lure. An 800-page report presented by a Special Commission has revealed widespread cruelty and malpractice. In addition, the report found that, in the past 12 years, almost half of all greyhounds bred to race were killed because they were not fast enough to compete. This amounted to between 48,000 and 68,000 dogs. There is uproar among owners and trainers. Other states have not followed suit as yet and say they have no plans to. There is a lot of talk about a few bad apples but recent TV reports using hidden cameras have revealed some horrific practices. There is also a thriving trade exporting dogs to Asian countries with false papers and identities. However, the ban itself is bound to result in many greyhounds being euthanized or, even worse, being killed without being taken to vets to be humanely put down. Greyhounds make great pets and contrary to what might be expected like nothing better than to be couch-potatoes. As pets, they do not need or want a lot of exercise at all. This is a very sad state of affairs and will distress dog-lovers everywhere. The photo is of our friend's dog, Mopsy, who wanted to be a greyhound when she grew up.

It's banned in a lot of states here. It's sad they would euthanize them instead of adopting them out.

@Elizaby That's good you have greyhound rescue. We have a greyhound adoption program, though we don't have any active tracks.

@just4him I think the adoption places are battling to place all the dogs they currently have let alone the influx there would be if the racing is discontinued.

We have a greyhound park here and a excellent greyhound rescue for when dogs are no longer profitable at the track

I love your last line. But what you describe sounds horrific. Their cruelty seems to know no bounds not just to the Grey Hounds.

The undercover videos were dreadful to watch. Not good at all. Mopsy was a lovely little dog. Really cute.

@JudyEv Mopsy looks really cute. I am imagining Mopsy walking right into your home after playing in the slush like that.

@sofssu She was a funny little dog. When she ran flat out her ears would fly out either side of her head.

Yes indeed.. that was a sad news.. it shocks me that here in Australia, despite the strict rules regarding sports using animals , soem people still get away with it..

This is so sad. I cannot understand why humans must always be so cruel toward the animals. It's a shame.

@JudyEv You are right, animal fighting is horrible, not only dogs, but bulls, bears and other animals.

It is very sad indeed. There are many sports where animals are exploited beyond what is humane.

that is pretty sad, instead of banning investigate, add laws, and make it so those who are criminals go to jail and never get to own a pet again

It seems the problems go right up through the ranks in NSW so the whole industry is being shut down.

Isn't she lovely? She loved coming out to our place and running 'wild'. She would bark at Herc but if he turned and looked at her or came across to make friends, she'd hide behind her Mum.

It seems a little harsh that the whole sport is abolished due to individual cases of abuse.

@JudyEv That is quite possible if the habits have been handed down to other generations.

I think it has taken many by surprise. There might be a giant backlash against it yet and the government might be forced to reconsider. At the moment they believe the abuse and corruption to be too entrenched.

Banning will result in a negative stage? Then should be taken a proper steps to not to harm any pets and continue the race.

I think they have tried to clean up the sport but there is too much corruption so the government is stepping in.

Greyhound racing is not a "sport" I could get into. I don't think there are any races in this area. I don't even know if it is legal here. There was a track and regular races where I went to college in California. One of the guys gave me a description but I was never tempted to go. I think as soon as you get into the kind of people to have to breed these animals for speed profit and gambling you end up with a mix of people who are unlikely to be very kind to the dogs.

I agree completely. Same with many sports involving animals. Greed and corruption seems to taint many of them.

I guess this was getting right out of hand. Having it all documented by the TV show didn't help. In the other states it all seems above board but it would always be hard to be sure.

Lol for Mopsy wanting to be a grey hound when she grow up. It`s time such practices are banned world wide, these animals get mistreated and only looked as money making machines and if not good enough, they get put down cruelly. I hope other of australia follows and ban this cruel practice

If they stop the racing completely, there will be far too many dogs for them all to be adopted as pets.

They have greyhound rescue groups who take the greyhounds and adopt them out here in the U.S. I have also heard that they make great pets.

It will be interesting to see what happens. The other states don't plan to ban greyhound racing so perhaps some of the dogs will go to trainers in other states.
