Making Frames in the Warmth

I've been saying how cold and wet it is here - by our standards. We stayed indoors yesterday and spent some time putting up more rails in the lounge to hold our photos and pictures after having had the walls painted. We needed to make some more picture frames so dodged the showers to get to the shed where we cut the timber for the frames, mitred the corners, rebated the under-edge to take the photo and routed the outside edge to a nice round shape. As the rest of the process is mess-free, we moved into the lounge where the fire was burning and the room was lovely and cosy. The floor is vinyl rather than carpet so we were happy to construct the frames in the warmth. We covered a trestle with an old blanket and set to work. The corners of the frames were stapled and glued then clamped using a smart gizmo we picked up at the hardware store. This makes easy work of what is usually quite difficult - getting perfect angles at each corner. Once the glue dries we'll use a little wood putty to tidy up any corners that need it, then give the frames a light sanding and finally paint them. It was nice to have a productive day without freezing ourselves to ice-blocks. And again we were reminded how having the right tools can make a task much easier.

You must have the right tools. Wish we could make our picture frames, but in an apartment you can't do anything like that.I have pictures everywhere but i have to buy the frames.

I invest on the right tools in making my craft too but in here, they can really be expensive.

We have collected our tools over 40-odd years so we have most of what we need now.

We pick up the photos from the winery today. There are a couple that we want to use on the walls. Then I'll take a photo. :)

One photo has been printed on canvas and that doesn't have a frame but it doesn't look too bad. We are lucky to have the tools although you don't need all the tools we have. Cutting the corners exactly at 45 degrees is the trickiest part.

@Jessicalynnt our canvas photo is stretched over something, wood I guess, that is about an inch thick so we'd have to rethink how to make a frame for that. We're not 'real' picture-frame makers.

@just4him We were going to paint them in the lounge as it is so cold in the shed but today is warmer so they've now all had one coat.

Thanks. We're picking up the rest of the photos in an hour or two and then make our decisions about which ones we'll hang up.

We have a mitre power saw which cuts the angles of the wood exactly right. This was always the difficult part before.

We enjoy doing stuff like this and we don't have a lot of spare money - at least what we have we don't want to spend buying stuff we can make for ourselves.

@Inlemay No, we just needed some frames after we got some of Vince's photos blown up for the little exhibition we had and decided they'd look nice on our 'new' walls.

We need a few and they need to be the right colour, etc. Frames are also really expensive - or at least we think so when we can make them for nothing.

And a saw that cuts the corners at exactly 45 degrees is handy too. The last frame we made is just a fraction large for this gizmo so we've used four right-angle clamps.
