She Mistook Herself

My husband and her auntie who is staying with us for good, after having resided in the USA for more than 35 years , opened yesterday one of the new boxes she sent here while she was still there. On it are her clothes and other things . Amongst her clothes are new blouses and shirts with tags on them still . She had them placed on the sofa of the living room and told my mother-in-law , without mentioning her name, to choose what she likes from the sofa . Auntie was speechless , when the ironing woman who was there that day , mistook herself as the one she told that and went to the sofa and chose 3 new blouses and shirts and thanked Auntie , still speechless. Mother-in-law was also speechless by what the ironing lady did , and just let it be. If you were the ironing lady , wouldn’t you ask my auntie to confirm if it was her indeed she meant , since she didn’t mention the name of my mother in-law ? When we were told about it in the evening , we were all surprised at how assuming our ironing woman was , at that instant . Good thing , my husband took all those that my Auntie presumed that i would like and those polo and shirts he also like .

Precisely . That's why auntie was so surprised she wasn't able to utter a word and so with my mother-in-law .

@SIMPLYD I feel she should have said something to the ironing woman.. and taken back the blouses.

The ironing lady has been rude, she has to ask first if she was talking to her and only after she had confirmation she could have chosen one thing she like, never three.

Precisely . She went straight ahead in going up to the receiving room and just took 3 without even asking if she can take 3 . That's why , my aunt wasn't able to say a word . She was so surprised by her sudden rudeness .

I am speechless too. If I were the ironing lady, I would have asked again to confirm if your aunt is really giving away those clothes. So, your aunt did not ask the clothes back from the ironing lady?

I don't share your attitude. If your aunt isn't capable of expressing herself clearly, it's her fault and not the ironing lady's. @magallon @kaka135

Well, yes , it's her fault mainly . It's because she is waiting for her to ask if it was her , but since she didn't and took 3 of those , she just let it be , because she doesn't want to embarrass her . But if i were my aunt , i would tell indeed the ironing lady , because it wasn't intended for her but for all of us in the house .

@MALUSE Well , i guess you are right . Maybe she just let it be because she still have lots to give away . But i must say , this woman is indeed so assuming . She would always assume on things she isn't supposed to do so my mother-in-law would tell her . After being told , she would do it again .

@SIMPLYD I'd find that mean. Why embarrass the ironing woman who's done nothing wrong. Your aunt made a mistake, not the other woman. It's not *mainly* her fault, it's **only** her fault! Besides, your aunt doesn't seem to be poor with so many things to give away.

@SIMPLYD At least, your aunt will earn indulgence for that :) I'm sure those clothes meant much, much more to the ironing lady than any of you who can afford.

Your Auntie should have told your ironing lady that it's not her that she is talking to. The ironing lady should be ashamed to do that.

@magallon Precisely . Had i been there , i could have been the one to tell the ironing lady that it's not for her to get them . I would tell her when she comes to iron the clothes that included in her duty is to also get the dried clothes from the clothesline which she doesn't do , but let my mother-in-law do it . So , ever since i told her that , she now get the dried clothes herself before starting to iron .

Golly, this is quite a story. I think the ironing lady thought that she was to pick out some items even if it was a mistake. I don't know of anyway it can be undone.

There's nothing that can be undone anymore , since my auntie doesn't want to embarrass her. She was expecting her to at least ask if it was her she was trying to mean since she was looking at my mother-in-law when she said those. Besides , she could have also asked permission , if she can get 3 .

@SIMPLYD it would not have been too bad if he only took one.. right? .. lol .. that reminds of when I was little living in the province, and someone from the city home with a suitcase full of "pasalubong" .. I was handed a doll from one of the aunties in Manila but as I was reaching out for it, one of the cousins grabbed it.. I remember everyone was shocked but no one did anything about it.. So I went home empty handed .. I was devastated! .. lol .. so I promised that when I grow up I will buy myself dolls ..ahahah!!

That is kind of funny. I can see why the ironing lady thought she was being offered something. But if I were the ironing lady I would have only taken one I think. Anyway a similar thing happened in my family. My aunt was offering some of her late husband's pants to my husband. My dad thought she was talking to him and he took them. He wore them all the time too! They would have fit my husband better. Every time we visited my dad and he was wearing those pants we had a little chuckle about it.

She's a hired ironing lady that comes on Sundays only . I don't really know why she acted that way . Our auntie hardly have interacted with her so she was surprised she acted that way , not even confirming at least if it was her . Auntie's fault was that she didn't mention the name of mother-in-law , her sister , so that's why the ironing lady might have thought it was her she was meaning to choose shirts .
