What's the big deal about a new month?

United States
August 1, 2016 7:16am CST
People get all excited - oh, it's a new month. I am not sure why because the way I see it nothing much changes except the date. * If you are in the process of bankruptcy or divorce, it won't change just because the calendar flips a page. * If you had rotten kids and a nasty husband last month, you probably still have them this month. * If you were too thin, too fat, too tall or too short in July, odds are you are the same today. * If you cooked dinner every night last month does that mean you won't do that in August? * If you are here at myLot today and were here yesterday, what's different? The only thing that really changes today is that you have to remember to write "August" on your checks. Photo: commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gfp-checkbooks.jpg

All this sounds a bit negative! Pity it's mostly true.

If I put in a bunch of happy stuff that doesn't change I would have gotten comments that life isn't good...so since I read a lot of complaining I went that direction.

I never really thought about it, perhaps because I always have a faint hope that things will be better this month, as if it wipes the slate, even though it really doesnt

The one thing that I always think at the beginning of months is "well now, the bills owed start over once again"!

Most of ours are paid by bank draft, so not writing a check almost seems like I'm not paying them.

I think it is symbolic of time flying by, the minutes of our life seeming to tick faster. Wasn't the 4th of July yesterday? It seems so but it's August.

I believe that the attraction at Mylot is the opportunity of submitting a new post about the month changing.

Nothing changes, but I always remember when August starts because the 1st of August is Swiss National Day that means fireworks by the lake this evening.

@AbbyGreenhill No, the lake of Lugano is 20 miles north from our house, we cannot see the fireworks by the lake, but we did not move and we saw the fireworks they made in the upper village from our balcony. We were safer and more comfortable than driving to Lugano.

@Drosophila When I was younger my mother started many conversations with 'I beg to differ with you....' which usually led to a lecture to whomever she was talking to, usually my father or myself....to this day that phrase to me is like nails on a chalkboard. Sorry!

Every day is a big deal for some of us, but the money earned here is fun money - I don't spend it. We go away (not to Italy) this month.

Well, all of your bills come due again. It reminds you of the passage of time, and you're closer to Autumn (or Winter, or Spring, or Summer.)

Well that is a very negative way to look at thing. I am excited because my birthday is this month in 5 days. I also move back into college on the 13th. There are a lot of reasons to be excited for a new month like birthday, anniversaries, pregnancies, someone might be trying to start a new workout plan or finally made the step to change their diet, or good weather for most of the month, or just something as simple as getting to go grocery shopping because you didn't have money to go before. You have to find the good in even the smallest things.

I wrote what people on here complain about - it's nothing but the truth. It's not how I feel. I have a great life My birthday is this month also. I have a million things to be happy about, but I did last month also. This was all written 'tongue in cheek'. You're young and maybe don't know what that means.
