My neighbour's lovely golden retriever was old when she moved next door 8 years ago. For the last few years she has kept the dog mostly indoors only letting her out for short times. I noticed several months ago that she was barely able to walk, having trouble supporting herself on her back legs. On Friday, I noticed that she was in the far side neighbour's yard and the gate was open. As I moved to the fence she came toward me then she stopped. I called to her , then realised that like my Lucy, she was mostly blind and deaf. She also has a big sore between her eyes, a big red lump rimmed with yellow. She turned and again went out her front gate at which time my neighbour was driving home. She called the dog into the yard but was ignored, she went after the dog and tried to drag it inside. The dog kept evading her. She gave her a hard smack on her rump and tried to push her through the gate with her cane at which point the dog went down, on her back in a totally submissive position. The woman is all the time speaking nastily and angrily to the dog and it's about now that she kicks her. My stomach turned over and I began to walk away in case it was embarrassing for her for me to be there. I thought maybe she wouldn't hurt the dog if I went away. I cried for ages and begged for this poor doggy to die to be safe from this horrid woman. It's not the first time I have seen her be cruel and I have reported her but I don't know what else to do to make this stop. It makes me sick to think about how she treats this beautiful dog.

This is so sad. You say that you already reported and nobody came to check!? I cannot believe it. How can we fight against animal cruelty if those who are supposed to help do nothing.

It's justt my word in this case. We live in a remote community and the people whose job it is to checkout these things are thin on the ground.

The police will not do anything when you report them. The poor dog should not have to suffer like that.

report her again, or next time she is home "let the dog out" and "find it" and then "take it to the vet"...maybe. I'd risk getting fined and that dog would vanish, people like that make me sick

i like the idea but she keeps the dog confined indoors mostly. The chance to do any dognapping rarely, if ever, comes along.

It's time to stand up and give that woman a chewing out @MsTickle . If she's willing to do that in the yard in front of people, you can imagine what she is doing to it inside the house. Australia has strict laws about cruelty, so it's time to report her again and tell them exactly what you saw and that you know the animal is in horrible health conditions.

I know how you feel but I try not to think this way because it means I am no better than she is.

Why didn't you report this? I certainly would. I would call the dog pound.

In cases like these, a picture and a video are worth a thousand words. If you can, get a video of the abuse. Send copies of the videos to the local Police, all the animal shelters in your area, and to your local news stations. When the video is shown in these places, action will be taken. It is a shame that the dog is suffering from her hands. If someone cannot handle a senior dog, they don't need them.

Oh my! I've always thought that here in Australia, dogs are treated like humans too .. that's how we treat our dog.. like our own child ..

Yes, that's how all my darlings are treated. when i first moved here i was really alarmed at the neglect and cruelty with which animals, both pets and livestock, are treated.

Goldens are among the most loving and faithful dogs in the world. I hate to hear of one being mistreated. They do age poorly, and I think they tend to develop hip problems, but a little love and fetch can make their "golden" years better.

The movie Hachiko which isn't about animal cruelty but about a loyal dog made me cry buckets. Now this. Sad.

This woman sees herself as someone who knows everything including how to treat dogs (in spite of the fact that she had very little schooling and can barely read).

I would report her repeatedly and even go so far as to yell at this heartless woman.

I have yelled at her plenty. Continuing to report her would end up with me being blacklisted.

@MsTickle it is sad. It seems that many people start loosing their patience with a dog when they are older and slower. Many of these older dogs end up in a shelter and are unadoptable. It is a sad way for them to end a life of giving unconditional love.

She loses patience when ever she doesn't get her way.. She's vulgar and uneducated so there's no talking to her.

many people who keep dogs but did not love it. This course is very unfortunate, because the dogs actually can reciprocate affection given employer more. If he is not able to give affection to his dog, he should not have that's dog. That's a crime and a crime should be rewarded with punishment
