Today, in 1974 our only unelected president took office. At noon, Richard M. Nixon resigned and left the White House. His Vice President, Spiro T. Agnew had been removed from office due to corruption earlier in his term. Gerald R. Ford replaced him. When Nixon left office Gerald Ford, the appointed replacement for Agnew became the only non elected President of the United States. He later issued a pardon for Nixon for any crimes he might have committed in office. He said it was out of a desire to put the fighting and divisiveness to rest. Do you remember any of this, or are you too young?

I remember this event very well, I remembered it happened in Summer, but honestly I would have been unable to say which day. I think there are more than one non elected US Presidents, 4 were in the 1800, Ford is the last.

The others had been Vice Presidents, though, and elected to that office. Ford was appointed Vice President then became President. Many people were unhappy about that.

Of course, the Watergate affair made the expression "expletive deleted" popular both sides of The Pond. I remember visiting Washington in 1982 and thinking what an insignificant building Watergate was to have produced such a furore!

Yes, the outside of things may look insignifigant, but what goes on inside can create havoc.

I was surprised not to have seen it in another discussion yet. I am usually the last one to be up to date on politics.

I sort of remember. I was not much of a political person, at that time. Not much of a television person either, but I do remember.

My family was camping in upstate New York at the time. I was a twelve year old Canadian. I remember it was not a happy day.

@Platespinner The family didn't take up camp until after you were born that I recall. You don't remember it being any other way.

You would have maybe studied it in history. I am trying to remember the man who did not get to run for VP because of his mental health history. I do not remember when that was at all.
