Today was sewing club at church. I finished the hand sewing/mending on this baby blanket quilt that I worked on last month. We will still tie it, but today we worked on making new Chrismons for the church and repairing the old ones. I couldn't get a real good picture of it as I didn't want to stop the other ladies from working to have one of them hold it up for me, but you can see it pretty well. The lady sewed together all of her son's baby blankets and then asked us to finish it for her. It's a mess with all different thicknesses and fabrics. You may notice that the one in the center has a silky type binding. Not that this is a bad idea, in fact, it's an awesome idea for a memory quilt. I'm sad that I am not one that saves things like this to be able to do one myself. I don't know how old her son is, but I do know that the woman is about my mother's age. In fact, I don't know that she had a son. Maybe I just don't know the story. Maybe she lost him as a baby and that's why she held on to all of the blankets. Well, time is short today and I do want to get to a little more socializing here before moving on to other things, so I will close this post.

@marsha32 it does seem like a good idea but it must have been hard with the different material weights.

Yes, it was....at least she did the sewing of those together over just giving them to us. She did so though, then was lost on how to finish it.

In the old days they used to make quilts of family clothing pieces. I had one for many years until it finally wore out. This baby blanket one is a cute idea.

We should all make quilts out of old clothes.....or maybe not LOL I cut up t-shirts and turn them in to rugs and the tops of them turn in to rags. I have a few button up shirts that I like the material on in my room with the intent of cutting them for quilts. I wonder why now since I have fabric running out of my ears.

@marsha32 ....T-shirts could make some cool braided rugs. I like those.

I would be bothered by the different weights and textures, myself. It seems to mean something to her though. My old blankets mostly got sold or donated.

I found a blanket in the garage the other day that an old online friend had knitted for one of the grandkids..I think Ariel. This gal made them for any of her online friends having children or grandchildren. It made me sad that it hadn't been taken care of. And in our garage it was on the floor and had been wet. We washed it up, but the mildew stains did not come out of it.

I wouldn't even have thought of keeping all the baby blankets and sewing them together. I just don't think I was ever a very "domestic" person although I always love other people's things like that. I can't imagine keeping baby things throughout all the years. Maybe she has a pretty chest to keep things in.There are just so darn many things, and only so much space lol. My son still has his stuffed rabbit that his dad gave him when he was an infant in his crib. I am pretty impressed he was able to keep that. He's 41 years old now!

I just don't have much kept of anything from my children. I have some old schoolwork in an old broken file box. I have several years of homeschool work in boxes in the rafters of the garage. No need to keep it now though. It was kept in case I was questioned along the way that we were really having school.

That would be my guess as her and her hubby are thinking of permanently moving to their smaller vacation home in Missouri.
