Two new crafts...where to start?!

I have two projects I can't wait to get started.
One is a small wall hanging (quilted? ribbons? cross stitch?)
The other one is a family birthday calendar board. I recently saw one at a friend's house, have you seen one before? You can buy them, but I think it would be much more fun to make my own.
In case you're not familiar with calendar boards, they have the months of the year across the bottom, then little disks to hang under each month with your family and/or friends' birthdays for that month. Isn't that cool? (I'm easily impressed.)
Any suggestions for either of my projects? I know we have a lot of crafty myLotters on here!

I kind of like the idea of a little quilting around a photo. I'm not sure exactly what I want to do.

Have you ever thought of having a favorite photo embossed on a pillow case @1creekgirl ? There are a few sites for crafters where you can put your favorite photos on a pillow case or something like that and then you can embroider around the image ..... just remembered that cuz I love photography and keep telling myself I should learn some kind of needle work sadly I have no patience for needle work.

@rebelann Thanks! After having the photo printed on material, I could make a pretty wall hanging. Great suggestion!

That does sound like a neat calendar and a good way to not miss birthdays. We have so many of them in the summer.
I would like to see a picture of one.
You know me, I have too many craft and sewing projects in the works. I so much enjoy reading here on mylot what others are working on.

After doing some research, I decided it would probably cost more to make one than buy one! So I ordered one from Amazon. I still want to make a small wall hanging, just haven't decided what I want yet.

@1creekgirl Unfortunately with the cost of supplies it is usually cheaper to buy than to make. I think that is sad. Then when you make things to sell, so many people wonder why the price is "high"

That's cool! What kind of scarves do you make? One year I knitted some scarves, but later gave my supplies away.

I've seen those calendars. Unfortunately I don't think that would fit into my decor...when I had a more ''country-ish" home it would have fit. I haven't done crafts since I got a computer about 17 years ago LOL.

There are more contemporary, modern designs, but most do have a country look.

@1creekgirl I think the person who owned that country-ish home had one of them.

@1creekgirl I think both projects sound like they would be fun. If I were choosing for myself I think I would start with the family birthday calendar board. I have not seen one but think it would be an interesting project to try. I would used photos and specialty buttons or trinkets that show the person's favorite things.

Good idea. Mostly it has the name and birthday, but other things sound good too.
Every Christmas I make photo calendars for the family which have everyone's birthdays. But the board would be cute hanging up.

@HazySue I have been making the calendars for years and they turn into a record of things that happened during the year, as well as a photo album.
My kids joke about hoping they look good in pictures I take because they might end up in a calendar!

@1creekgirl what a wonderful gift the photo calendar is. Since you make them for family every year maybe you should try the other craft first. Maybe a wall hanging of favorite things.

I've seen those family calendar boards and I always wanted one. Making one yourself would probably be a great project

Did you complete both projects? I manage to miss a lot of discussions, did you post photos? I'll have to do some research.

After lots of research, I decided to buy a birthday board instead of making one. It was much less expensive and much nicer! Still thinking about a wall hanging!
