Memories of the Storm

One of the trees blocking driveway access for us and our neighbour.

Twelve years ago, 18 August 2004, we experienced a storm like no other. The wind roared around our home, threatening to lift the roof from our house. With a lot of furniture stored in one room downstairs, ready to be collected by a local trader the next day, our house already seemed empty. We were preparing to move to another home. When the storm reached its height in the middle of the night we no longer felt safe upstairs. We decided to drag the mattress from our bed downstairs, in case the roof decided to lift from the house. This was the worst storm we'd ever experienced. In the wee hours of the morning our neighbour knocked on the door. One of the many of our trees that had come down had banged against her window and she was scared. The three of us sat on the mattress together for the rest of the night, trying to ignore the storm outside that was trying to rip the world apart. At daybreak we inspected the damage outside. While both our homes were okay, our property wasn't. Many trees were down and it was to be days before we could leave the property without crawling under or across fallen trees. Hopefully we will never have to live through a storm like that again.

When we went outside to look at the damage the wind was so strong we couldn't stand up.

I feel nervous too when a storm rages - just like when I hear the sirens of firetrucks.

That storm caused unbelievable havoc throughout the city, trees down, roofs lifted, flooding. It was terrible.

@valmnz I'm sure that was terrible indeed, Ms. Val, and I really can't imagine the fear you had at that time.

@sunrisefan since then we've said we'll never live with large trees on our property, they are too much responsibility.

Storms are terrible and I know exactly what you felt and meant. Philippines is one of the most storm hit country on earth. 8 to 9 hit us yearly on average and around 10 enter our area of responsibility

@valmnz i must admit yes, natural calamities is a way of life if you live here but somehow we have learned to adopt. That storm that hit you, you must have been very near the eye that is why there is so much devastation.

I think you have far more natural adversities in Philippines than we do here in New Zealand.

Wow, I've never experienced a storm as bad as that, no wonder you were scared. At least your home wasn't damaged.

True, but the property was and that made the sale that had just gone through a little complicated.

@jaboUK sale had already gone through. Eventually they were compensated by Earthquake & War Commission - it no longer does that. They got a nice new driveway out of it. But no trees.

That does sound very frightening. I'm glad your roof didn't go. How awful that would have been although maybe it would have been the new owners worry.

It turned into a legal nightmare as the property was altered from what they signed up for! No trees, land altered, driveway damaged!

@JudyEv we were lucky to have an excellent solicitor and back then such activity was covered by the earthquake and war commission

@valmnz Oh no. I was hoping all the legal stuff would have been finished with. It's not something most of us would think about.

That's even milder than what we experiences during a typhoon . Some houses would find themselves with no roof because their roof was blown by the very strong wind .

The trees did cause damage to two other houses. And we had to employ a solicitor to settle with the people who'd bought the house.

I hope you will never have to live such a bad experience again. We escaped a serious hail storm two nights ago. A village not far from ours, got 20 cm of hail stones on the ground. At least they were not too big.

So many hail storms must have made a lot of noise! I can't imagine 20 cm of them.

@valmnz We had a bad hail storm 4 years ago, the hail stones were as big as apricots. It made a lot of noise and also a lot of damages in the garden. We were lucky that the cat was closed in the garage.

You took me to my experience last year in July when a mini tornado visited our place. It was kind of localised. There were so many trees in our compound that got uprooted and one a very tall tree d gently glided to almost touch the terrace of our neighbour but did not damage anything. I had a lot of work to do to clear the debris which was a few truck loads. All is well now.
