Have you done a spontaneous work like digging your garden? Last Saturday after taking my nap in the afternoon and drinking an instant coffee, I decided to pull the weeds outside the fence of my yard. There were rose moos or 10 o'clock flowers planted on it but they were no longer looking good as some of the neighbours kids walked on the flowers to climb on our fence and stole some ripe guava fruits. My 8 years old niece who lives 3 kms.from my house arrived when I was still drinking my coffee and told me she would help me. So we went outside the fence and started pulling the weeds. My small 9 and 11 years old nieces who lived in the back of my house with their parents, arrived in my front yard and saw what we were doing. There was always a competition between these 3 girls and so they helped pulling the weeds as well. There was a kind of "bayanihan" in that afternoon and so we were done faster as I have not expected and not even planned for. After having done the spontaneous work, I rewarded my nieces with 7Pesos, enough to buy them some favorite snacks in the kiosk nearby. My brothers always told me not to give money to their daughters when they came to help me because they might be expecting money when ask to do some small tasks at home. But hey, it's only a small amount and they have worked hard with me in my garden. Do you give money to your nieces or nephews when they help you doing some house or garden work? This afternoon, I will plant Lantana Camara instead of Rose Moos/ 10 o'clock flowers in that space we cleaned last Saturday.

I think it is fine to pay children occasionally especially when they haven't been asked to help and the work is perhaps a bit hard. I don't think it is a good to always do this but sometimes a cookie or something will do instead.

I agree with you @JudyEv. I only give them money when it's hard work like pulling the weeds. Sometimes I just treat them of some goodies I am baking. They help me too when I am baking because they know that I would also bake something for us to eat. Not just for orders.

@thelme55 I think, treated the right way, children love to help and they can learn so much just from helping and watching.

@JudyEv yes, I agree with you. They are fond of helping me that sometimes I wonder why there was always a row between their mother and my nieces because of not helping at home. You see, kids are trained to help their mothers at home. That was why I told my nieces to help their mother as well. Not me. I think I have different approach when it comes to parenting.

I remember that I gave small amounts of money to my niece when she was a young girl and she helped. It's nice to have someone who helps in the garden and I was glad to teach her something while we were working.

@LadyDuck When my nieces helped me in the garden, I told them also the name of the plants and how they should be taking care of. It is also a kind of education to them.

I have saved some of the 10 o'clock flowers but I would no longer plant it outside the yard. Just inside my garden @silvermist.

That's a huge amount for an 8 to 11 years old. It's okay though for me but if I will give that huge amount then I will get trouble with my siblings @AkoPinay. Then I will better bring them to McDonald's.

I would sure gladly pay the grandkids to help me if I only had money to do it. Shoot, I would pay a stranger off the street if I had the money!

i agree with ya, those young'uns ought to be rewarded fer all their work. particularly when not asked to pitch'n. dang, can i borrow 'em fer a bit??? can't get a single soul out this way to help with such a task. yer garden 'tis gonna look lovely with that lantana. i wish such'd grow here successfully - a fav 'f the butterflies 'n bees.
