Crafty Crows Create Chaos

We are having trouble with crows coming onto the verandah, swearing at their own reflections in the glass doors and pecking holes in the flywire screens. As soon as we hear them cawing we run out and scare them off but that doesn't stop them coming back each day to check out if we're home or not. We're in the process of replacing all the flywire in the house. The stuff there at the moment is plastic based and not recommended in bushfire-prone areas so we're replacing it with aluminium wire. I had thought this would be tough enough to stop the crows but no – they've already put a hole in one of our 'new' screens. I'm not sure what our next plan of attack will be. Maybe I'll just shoot the rotters. And do you like my title?

have you thought about putting a wind catcher type thing near the window ... that moves as I don't think crows or many other birds for that matter like movement so they would not want to settle on that window... or a shredded plastic bag on a stick ... that moves and makes a rustling noise... or a small kite anchored to the ground that flutters about... again this would scare them enough not to come and sit on your windows or verandah.... and they don't hurt them ...

I've had lots of good ideas put forward and thanks for another one. Something that moves is what I want I think.

Yes, I could stand it up in the lounge - but it would scare me silly every time I saw it! :)

Very cute title. Is there anything you can put on the screen itself or near it to deter them? I am not sure how well a strong smelling product might work as the sun might wear it's smell away over time. However, it's worth a try to keep them away!

@JudyEv That's a good idea, and would hopefully deter them. Also would be on the cheapish end as chili powder isn't too expensive at all.

I thought about spraying the wire with a chilli mixture. A smelly one is a good idea as long as we can stand the smell too. :)

Maybe I'll just sit in the lounge near the doors all day. At least I'll have a good excuse for doing nothing. :)

They are stubborn birds, I think that you should buy an ultrasonic crow repeller. Yes, I like your title.

I have no clue how to deter them from pecking at your aluminum wire. It does sound like a bad problem. I wonder if you could look online and see if there are any helpful tips.

@JudyEv I am reminded of Alliteration.Good title.Usually if we have glasses where they can see their reflection they behave like that. But I see it is not the case here.

They must see themselves from their position or they wouldn't be attacking the screens.

@silvermist It is usually mornings but not all. They are very suspicious and caw around the place before actually coming onto the verandah.

That's a great title for an odd predicament. I know that crows are birds of habit, so somehow you have to break their habit of pecking at your screens. I wonder if you had some sort of motion-detected item near the windows that would make a sound and scare them off if that would help.

That's a good idea. I have biggish bird ornaments so perhaps I should stand those on the floor just inside. But I don't really want to have them sitting there for the rest of my life.

@JudyEv No you'll just have to do it long enough to change their habit so that they find another place to hang out.

@Jessicalynnt We could paste stuff all over the glass but I don't really want to do that. I might at motion-activated toys or something.

We don't have any cats or dogs so there is never any food left there. I think they just see their reflections as rivals.

@judyev There's just no getting through to birds and flies. You can yell and scream till you're blue in the face but they forget instantly, a bit like my children.

Very cool title and I've had birds run into my windows and knock themselves out (sometimes they kill themselves) I put decals on the windows and hung colored glass in the windows but they occasionally still run into the window. in the winter I have a dove that snuggles next to its reflection for comfort - no pecking... This link might help:
Tips to stop birds from attacking windows and mirrors, including why they peck their reflections and what birds can be this aggressive.

Thanks for the link. I guess we'll have to end up putting something on the glass to stop the reflections.

Great title! Crows scare me sometimes. I wrote a post once about crows (can't remember if it's here or on Bubblews). They have very good memory and if someone does something bad to them they will remember the face and call up their gang to revenge. Yikes!
