It is almost midnight here in the Philippines. I am checking my photos so I could have an idea what to write. Then I saw this photo of Bratwurst (German sausage ), peeled potatoes and steamed beet root. I feel hungry. I miss this German food and I can't have this here in the Philippines. As you can see, there's no gravy in the plate. I don't like gravy much in my food. Do you miss food when you are in vacation? What is it? Before I go to sleep, I have to eat something or else I will dream of this food.

Looks wonderful! Beetroot, or red cabbage? And I see a dob of mustard on the end of that Bratwurst, I believe... I too would enjoy such a repast.

@MALUSE The title made me think of you, y'see. I too think "rot Kohl". Or "Rotkohl".

vacation? what is that? actually our vacations usually consist of going camping and for whatever reason, foods we normally eat at home taste so much better while camping.

I think that the food tastes better while camping because of all that fresh air and the feeling of being free.

Oh how I love camping but I have not done it. I wish I could. Just a picnic with all the foods we loved to eat @marsha32

@marlina I agree. I eat more outside than inside the house. That's the fresh air I should say.

I have never travelled outside the U.S. Not that I don't want to, maybe I can someday. So I really haven't had to miss food. Except when I didn't live close to my folks and I had to miss my mother's cooking. That was hard when that was the situation. I never have learned to cook as well as she has, although I'm learning some of her recipes. I'm lucky she's still living to tell me!

I've never tasted German sausage - is it very spicy?

Not really - I have had spicier Cumberland sausage! The best place to try weird and wonderful German sausages is in the Weihnachtsmarkt, the traditional open-air markets in the 4 advent weeks leading up to Christmas in any town you care to choose in Germany. If you are lucky, you can find a Jagd stall, stocked with provender that hunters provide - venison sausages and other delicacies, all cooked and served before your eyes...

@thelme55 @JaboUK Yes, Germany has sausages for every occasion, as well as for every time of day. Weisswurst is traditionally served, with sweet mustard, before noon - for example. Yes, Lidl locally has been known to stock these once or twice a year, typically around Oktoberfest time and Easter. So I expect to ser them back in the next three or four weeks, along with Krautsalat, a wonderful sweet-pickled savoury white cabbage dish.

German sausages are the best in the world @jaboUK. Maybe it is too spicy for you. German sausages and other German food are sold in Aldi or Lidl in England and Ireland. You can try it for a change. When we were living in Ireland, we were happy to have found these German supermarkets in the country.

@thelme55 That's good if you only get to eat rice once a week.It means you will have no fear of getting fat and having diabetes .

In general, I like both. In Germany I cook almost everyday with different food from another country. If not German, then Italian. Only once a week Pinoy food. That means, once a week rice.

I like the food from several countries and I do not really miss a specific kind of food when I am in vacation. What I miss is home made food, what you eat at restaurants is always too greasy.

@thelme55 We lived 6 months in Los Angeles in the 80s, but I did not really miss the Italian food, even if I cooked the food in our rented apartment, so I made something similar to Italian.
