I go away for a couple of minutes and the other half of D&D- the resident bullies group write a post on putting coins away for saving in make-do piggy banks. So there I go down the memory lane... I used to do that as a kid. I would make a slit in the powder bottles. When I was really little I had many piggy banks. Well not all piggy but rabbit banks, teddy bank, horse bank lol As I grew older, I had a small safe made of steel which could be locked using a teeny tiny key! Getting older and I had this toy dog house. It had a tiny door and a button to put the coin on. You put the coin, the button get pressed, a dog would jump out of the door and drag the coin in. Getting older yet again and now I had an earthen pot thing with closed mouth and a slit. When it was full, we got to break it to get to the money. Now I have none! Can I have yours? What sort of little banks you had as a child or even an adult? (Photo by Pixabay)

When I was little i used old cocoa tins with a slit in the top made with a tin-opener. Now we put all our £2 coins in a regular piggy bank, but we don't have to smash it, it has a rubber flap underneath.

@jaboUK My horsey, piggy, rabbit and teddy bank had rubber flap underneath too. I was notorious at emptying those out frequently! lol

I have one now that I really like. I picked it up at a thrift shop. It's in the shape of a milk bottle, with a slit on it and a cork on top. It has a sunflower painted on it and a message:" Rainy Day Money." I put all my coins in it. When it's full I'll turn them in and see how much I've got. You can't have it, LOL.Sounds like you had some cute ones growing up.

I had a small ceramic pig (I still have it), but I do not need to smash it, it has a rubber lid on the bottom of its fat belly.

@Daljinder You should NOT remove the lid, this is the purpose of those little banks.

We used to have same kind of earthen pots, as you have mentioned. We used to save coins and when the pot became full, we used to break it. However, no such thing happens now because coins have lost their value. Coins of Rupee one or Rupees two, even if deposited in such an earthen pot do not give you a handsome amount to buy anything. Nowadays, there is on line banking and ATMs to transact and withdraw the money.

@Daljinder Due devaluation of money, we just cannot resort to piggy banks for our savings.

@dpk262006 That is true about coins! One can't accumulate enough amount either. It will take years to get a handsome amount saved up with coins

My piggy bank was a mushroom when I was a kid. I have still one with colored LEDs lighting on each time you drop a coin, and a counter telling how much money there is in the piggy bank. I put my small copper coins in it when they weight too much in my pants pockets.

We also used to have those piggy banks made of clay like that in the picture . And once it's full father would break and count how much , then ask the one who owns it what she wants to buy with it . Now , i have a green Ben 10 tin can with a slit and a key to open it . In it i put in folded bills sometimes a 500 pesos or $10.65 . But sometimes , i open it when it's not payday yet and i ran out of allowance and don't like to withdraw from my ATM , and get some 100 bills . WHen payday comes i put it back with some more bills .

I mostly had a rainbow bank, I painted it myself at a pottery place. Once I had $75 in it as a teenager. I moved out of my parents house and left it (not knowing how much was in it). My younger sister called and asked if she could have my change. I didn't think it was much so I said sure. She told me a week later, by the way thanks for the $75!! Lol, I was a good saver most of my life.

When I was a kid I had a robot piggy bank. He was a little yellow robot, you put the coin in his hand and he would then put the coin in his mouth and 'swallow' it. LoL. I wonder where he is now!
